Hit the local flea market this morning. Lo and behold I see a pre war model 70 sitting on the table. I said how much? Guy said 1300. I said will you take 1200? He said yes, sold! I couldnt get the money out fast enough. BSA deal I believe. Shes a 1941(ser#41xxx) 22 Hornet- stamped 22H-38 under barrel. No extra holes anywhere. She wears a Stith mount with a weaver model 440 post reticle in I believe 4x? Functions perfectly. Stock was probobly redone awhile ago. I will shoot her on thursday.
AK you are correct. I blew an inch of dust out of the front lens! I had to oil it pretty heavy. I even oiled the outside of the scope. Probobly sat in a closet for 45 years! I still cant believe how much a pre war stands out. I guess because they are rarely seen?
Congrats on that prewar 70 .22H find!!! Not into that chambering per se, but with a Model 54 about minty w/Lyman 48 aperture simply priced not to be passed up. I do have a Model 70 from 1942, pix below. In 270 Win chambering but identical set up to yours, with Weaver 440 Scope in same Stith "no drill" mounts. Same fantastic era-correct, no extra holes! Yours, of course, the rare Hornet chambering... Agree with that lottery ticket assessment find! It does appear the gun was refurbed in stock at some point and possibly blue job too? I can't tell, but still a bargain considering "the package"! By the way, the fact of the 1938 barrel date is normal "factory" utilization since barrels were made in chambering batches and - as uncommon as a Hornet chambering - might languish on the mfg shelf for some years before buildout. My .270 twin SN is also in 41K. Literally 37 digits into 1942 production according to best info! Those Weaver scopes are bit funky, just as they should be too - "era correct". Again, congrats!
Amazing iskra we have the exact same scope set up. I was told just the mounts and scope easily bring 300+ . I think I made a good investment. Shooting it tomorrow morning
4 shots at 25 yds. First shot went high. Next 3 in the same hole. Cheap PPU ammunition. That post reticle really covers the bullseye up! Absolute joy to shoot!!
