I lived in Mobile for 7 years.
Personally I couldn't wait to get out of that town, the best thing about it is its proximity to Destin and New Orleans
Unfortunately my wife is from there and so all my in-laws are there. I still have to go visit, and have been for the last 25 years , 2 or 3 times a year.
I think the best thing about Mobile is Sugar Rush donuts located on Airport Road, and I'd take a few 70 degree days in February once in awhile

very low key. miles and miles and miles of public beaches; alabama aquarium; fishing on those miles of beaches; zero franchise fast food restaurants; all locally owned; birding trail; marvelous sunrises and sunsets; deep sea and flatwater charters ...

I used to stay quite a bit in Fort Morgan and have taken the ferry over to to Dauphin Island. Seems like rental prices are allot better on Dauphin Island. I always preferred to stay on the Bay side with a dock near the opening into the gulf. Night fishing for specs around the docks in the bay can be awesome. I always had a boat and I have caught over a dozen 30+ pound bull reds off of dixie bar. You can take the ferry over to Fort Morgan and then run into Gulf Shores if you are wanting to go to the very touristy area which may be required if you are bringing kids. You can get both inshore and offshore guides out of the Fort Morgan Marina. The restaurant at the marina used to have a really good blackened grouper sandwich. I don't know if they still do. If you are into gambling, you can run over to Ms.
Not sure why people are bringing up Mobile. Thats like comparing Pensacola to Pensacola Beach. They aren't the same place.

While you're there, it may be worth a couple of day trips. One to the USS Alabama Battleship if you haven't been. The other to the Pensacola Museum of Naval Aviation. If you time the Pensacola trip right (call ahead), you may catch the Blue Angels practicing out back.

Bellingrath Gardens close by. Well worth the visit. Someone mentioned the aquarium. It's worth the visit as well.

Has anyone else noticed that the Russians have taken Gulf Shores? Service industry workers?

Ain’t much on Dauphin Island. If that’s what you’re looking for, it’s great. A couple of decent restaurants, a marina, and a convenience store is about all I remember. And the estuarium. If you want to go somewhere more touristy, you can always go over to Mobile or Gulf Shores.

Not sure why people are bringing up Mobile. Thats like comparing Pensacola to Pensacola Beach. They aren't the same place. This is true. You have to go through Mobile to get to Dauphin Island but it's not Mobile. Two completely different places.
