I have a good friend that I trade out tractor work with but I've never hunted or target shot with him. He along with his wife and 2 grown children, a son and daughter are magnum rifle shooters and are quite successful taking whitetails and our big Eurasian hybrid hogs.

He shoots a 7mm Ultra Mag with 175 grain ELD-X reloads powered by a max load of Retumbo. Now, he tells me he sights in for 300 yards and is 1 inch high at 100 yards, 1 inch high at 200 yards, on at 300 yards, and 1 inch low at 400 yards. I am looked at as sort of Neanderthal for using a .30-06.

I know we have a long range forum but there is more exposure here. I say this is impossible. What do you magnum shooters say? He swears he has rechecked his rifle at those ranges and it holds true with no holdover or hold under using straight up crosshairs without hash marks for range.

I don't think he is intentionally lying, he seems to believe his rifle does this.

That's what I think. I think he is just wrong. I'm going to invite him over to shoot through my chrony and I'm going to make a 200 yard shot a 300 yard shot and a 400 yarder if he will let me.

Using the Hornady ballistic calculator I get 3" high at 100 yards and 3.6 high at 200 yards. 8" low at 400., 3100fps launch speed 0.95 G1 BC

If he's running 3050 fps, with a 300 yard zero and a 1.9" scope height, I'm getting 3" high at 100, 3.7" at 200, and 8.5" low at 400.

Maybe he needs a new rangefinder.

Pretty impressive but still doesn't match that 1 inch or less variation claimed for the 7mm Ultra out to 400 yards.

That is why I'm going to invite him over so we can shoot at premeasured ranges. I also think he over estimates MV on those 175 grain ELD-X bullets.

He really is expecting that rifle to hit basically the same at all ranges out to 400 yards and I'm not believing it.

If he lets you give it a try, be sure to post the results here. I'm talking about the results of him trying to explain how your shot was somewhat more than an inch below point of aim at 400 yards.🤣 Giving him a pretty generous 3200fps muzzle velocity, drop at 400 yards, with a 300 yard zero, should be around 7.5 inches. Pretty impressive really.

Edited to add that I used 3200fps, because I'm just assuming that the guy is likely pushing the pressure envelope.

As Benny Hill once said, "It's inkosiggle."

I ran into some guy at the range once making similar claims about his 300 Ultra Mag. Claimed he held dead on and always hit 'em right in the eye at 700 yards. It was hard to keep a straight face, I'll tell you.

Perhaps he's shooting up a steep slope. He could be correct in the right conditions.

That’s with 140s I highly doubt anything heavier is flatter

Playing around with jbm calculator, I'm coming up with about 4200fps muzzle velocity with 175 grain ELD-X to end up with a 1" drop at 400 yards with a 300 yard zero.

I'd be curious to know if there is a currently available case that could be necked to .284 and coupled with an available powder to get 4200fps with a 175gr bullet at something around 60,000psi. Guessing that would result in pretty short barrel longevity.

The Creedmoor boys don't own half of the cartridge optimism that's available. The RUM & dash (6.5-300, 30-378, etc.) guys have the biggest hopes & dreams of them all.

That defies the laws of physics.

Might be for the best.

I have a high school buddy that moved out west just after graduation. 20+ years later he moved back. He carried a 25-06 with loads developed by a friend of is in MT. He claimed some pretty fantastic velocities and trajectories . Our hunting shack had a range out to 300 and cronys.

We tested his velocity, not even close to what he was told by his handloader friend and his trajectories were even more disappointing.

He left in a huff and didn’t hunt that fall.
