I have a 7mm ultra mag, it is a laser. Your friend exaggerated a touch. Mine could use a new stock , preferably one that weighs 15 lbs. It sits a lot now, it was fine when I had a muscle a few years ago.

With such precise, flat trajectory measurements, maybe he's factoring in the curvature of the earth somehow. At 8" per mile that's 2" per quarter mile (440 yds) it could make a difference!

Or more likely he's just a better tractor man than he is a ballistician...

After all it's a hunting story, right?

I figured it out, he's talking about feet not yards, on at 300' , 1'' high @ 200 feet, 1'' low @ 400 feet.

You may be right. Proving someone wrong is not a way to make friends.

So, if the guy is only capable of shooting ~8" groups at 400, then checks his zero with 1 or 2 shots at 400, it is conceivable that shot(s) could land only 1" low at 400. But shooting more would ruin that illusion.

I work with a couple of guys that say they shoot fast magnums and exagerate the trajectory. I guess they think I am stupid and can't look at the ammo website to see what they claim it does. I just smile and nod my head and say wow that is impressive. Seems like they never have any deer pictures to show when the season is in.

You guys are all fullocrap. It's what is stamped on the case head that makes for a good flat-shooting cartridge.

Sheesh.

Hold into the headstamp!

You know quite scientifically what you know. He believes what he believes…which isn’t fatal. If you disprove his opinion, what do you achieve? Good opportunity to lose a friendship. Since you’re not espousing his claim you’re not in the splatter zone. Let ‘em whirl.

Is his name Mike? Lol. I got a buddy who basically thinks the same thing about 7mm RM.
while they are a flat shooting SOBs they aren’t lasers or defy gravity

All of them do something better than the 30-06, but none of them do everything as well.

I knew a guy that was always bragging at how awesome and how powerful his 7 mag reloads were. He said his 150g bullets were going over 3300 fps. This was over 20 years ago when few people owned chronographs. I owned one back then so I took it with and went shooting with him. I had just bought a blr in 308 and was working on a load for it.

I set up the chronograph and had him shoot his 7 mag over it. It clocked a bit over 2700 with his awesome load. He said my chrony didn't work and read slow. I pulled out the blr and put one over it and clocked 2820. I said that's about what I expected with that 308 load from a 20" barrel. He ended up shooting about 10 more rounds of 7mag over my chrony and they were all around 2700. He still didn't believe it because that had been his killer load for years. He also went one and one about how superior his 7 mag was to my 308. I said in most cases that's true but not with his reloads.

My chrony ruined the dreams of many reloaders back then when few people had used one.

I was gifted a 7mm RM Model 700 BDL once upon a time. With a max load of H4831 and a 160 NP I was getting a little over 2700fps through my chrony which had proved to record speed accurately. I had the chance to trade it for a left hand model 700 BDL IN .270W. My son in law is left handed and so is my grand daughter so I gifted the .270 to them.

There was really nothing wrong with the 7mm except it was slow and recoiled pretty strong and trajectory was no better than my .30-06 with 180 SST. So I just shoot the '06

Hastings,
When I was a kid I remember getting the data from a bullet rise mid-range trajectory chart confused with it meaning bullet drop. I think your friend is more confused than I was.

It would probably be OK for your friendship to shoot targets together if you don't rub it in.
