I'm disinclined to hunt with a rifle for which I need a muzzle brake. You need a brake for a .243? That wasn't it.

I bought one of them the first year or two they came out in 223. It was a nice rifle . My brother bought one in 308 wood stock short barrel. That thing was the hardest kicking most uncomfortable thing I ever shot. And I hunt mostly with a 300 Weatherby and a 35 Whelen. I can shoot better than him and he always asked me to shoot it and check his zero for him. I always dreaded it.

I love model 7's. My very first deer rifle was a model 7 in 7-08, 18 1/2", with wood stock. I believe I was 12 y/o when I received it. Still have it; still love it.

i have three 7-08 model 7's in my safe, Dads (RIP), my youngest son's and mine. walnut stock, 18.5" barrel on all of them. they are sub minute accurate, but you rarely need more than one shot to kill game. i used 139gr Hornady FN and IMR4320, both of which are discontinued. i still have a small stash of both. we loved it, especially my dad. he didn't like the stock, so he built another to his own specifications from black walnut.
i had a model 7 in 243 but i sold it.

I had a Model 7 CDL in 223 that was a real neat rifle. Great looks and shot decent, not great. Sold it and bought a Tikka and wouldn’t look back.

I have one in a 243, everything said so far is true.
It's muzzle light and whippy, It is loud.
And a personal gripe is the chambering.
I keep watching the classifieds for a 700, 308 takeoff. Figure on cutting one to 20", then hack until it feels right.

IMO, the Remington 7s with 18.5" barrels and wooden stocks are poorly balanced, too butt-heavy. I prefer a neutral balanced rifle, so my Remington 7s that arrived with 18.5" barrels have mostly been rebarreled with a variety of longer and/or heavier contour barrels. The 22" 700 MR barrels really improve the balance, as do the 20" Remington 700 Youth barrels. I have put Remington 7 barreled actions in a variety of after-market synthetic stocks from Bansnar, McM, and H-S, but don't recall getting satisfactory balance with the 18.5" barreled actions.
Some people love 'em as is, but I'm a tinker, always striving to make things just a little bit better, so my shooters, in contrast to my collectors, usually get modified in some way to better fit me, physically, and my requirement, theoretically.

I had one in .308 for a few years. In a moment of stupidity got rid of it. For the right price I wouldn't hesitate to get one in .243.

I've got a late '90's SS 7mm-08 with 20" barrel, with the factory plastic stock it balanced terribly. Picked up a Brown FS stock a number of years ago and it balances wonderfully now and is my favorite Northern woods rifle. Had another one of those stocks and stupidly sold it a handful of years ago.

Those pebble-grain tupperware stocks were as heavy as laminates. Newer ones are 10-12oz lighter, if I recall correctly.
Now with even more aplomb

I have a 90s in 308, replaced the synthetic stock with a walnut stock and it balances much better though likely not as well as a truly light custom.

I acquired two stainless Mountain rifle contoured barrels one in 7-08 and the other in 308 with the thought of replacing the very light original 18" barrel. To improve balance and slightly lessen muzzle blast. The rifle is presently my favorite deer rifle, 7-08 it shoots just fine. I took that butt heavy wood stock off it and replaced it with one of the Predator synthetic stocks bought from a poster here. This made a lot of difference. I topped it with a 3 power Weaver and have a light rifle that will do pretty much anything I need in a deer rifle. The rifle is only slightly muzzle light now and no longer thinking of re barreling. Might put together a faux mountain rifle using a short 700 action I have laying around just haven't decided on which cartridge to use.

For how much they are asking for model 7s these days just go with a nice custom action like Falkor, defiance, ect in a true short action (or med/wyattcut). There is way more aftermarket support and the gun will be much more versatile in the future if you decide to change things on it.

I have a couple of the laminated Mannlicher-style stocks that came off of Remington Custom Shop 7MS rifles that were parted out for the actions. I wonder what kind of thought process went into buying an expensive Custom Shop rifle just for the actiion? I've bought Remington 7s to use for donor actions, a matched pair in 250 and 300 Savage using recycled 700 Classic barrels that were cut back from 24" to 20", but I think that I paid around $350 for the donors, which were 7 Youth style rifles.
