Thanks for this thread. Some good information. I had Accuracy Systems barrel a mini 14 to 6x45 a few years ago. If things ever settle down here between the remodel, garden and wife’s health, maybe I can get to the range to try a few loads.
Chronographs, bore scopes and pattern boards have broke a lot of hearts.

For a deer bullet the 85 gr. Speer BTSP, the 100 grain Speer BTSP and the Hornady 100 gr. flat based interlok would be my choices run with IMR 4895 or LVR. In my youth I had a 243 with an 18 inch barrel and it got 2830 fps with the Remington 100 gr. Corelokt. That rifle was a Remington Mohawk, they were on model 600 actions. I'll hunt with the round this fall, but I've got a second barrel from Douglas to put on a Model 70 or Ruger 77 Mk2 Action, that is a " predator " contour and 24 inch barrel, with a one in 7 twist.. This ought to get a little more velocity... some guys have posted taking antelope sized deer with Speer 70 gr TNTs and 75 grain HPs, which can run at 3000 to 3100 fps... but I'll probably be loading up the 90 to 105 grain bullets, with the 24 inch barrel. I have a bunch of the Speer 100 gr. BTSP's, well known to be pretty soft. I just obtained a 6 AR with a 20 inch barrel and mostly look at it as a coyote calling rifle and an anytime a hog shows up gun. Might but probably won't hunt deer with it. Any soft bullet would work. My real interest is getting 55 gr. Ballistic Tips or 58gr. Vmax's to run fast and accurate.

Savage 10, 20 inch Douglas Barrel, 1 in 7 twist, Heavy Varmint profile.
6 x 45, 25 gr 4064, Rem 7 1/2 primer
1. 87 grain BTHP Hornady: a: 2595 fps b: 2576 fps
2. 100 grain BT Speer SP: a: 2585 fps b: 2575 fps
3. 105 grain BTHP Hornady: a: 2530 fps b: 2540 fps
4. 105 grain A Max Hornady: a: 2538 fps b: 2500 fps
ZSR Turkish Brass 223 necked up to 6 x 45
25 grains of IMR 4895, Rem 7 1/2 primer, 100 gr Hornady SP.
a: 2773 fps
b: 2774 fps
c: 2833 fps You've been doing a lot of shooting with this 6x45. Weather must be pretty good? It's been raining off and on over here with some pretty mild temps. Thankfully during my shoot last Saturday, it was damn nice: Tried shooting yesterday, but it wanted to rain the whole damn time!!! If you have not tried the 85gr Sierra gameking, I'd be trying that one. I don't know how the 90gr gamechanger would do, but that could also be a great candidate for a deer bullet. My 6x45 also really liked the 100gr Hornady btsp. Those were on sale last year for a damn good deal, so I bought about 600. I sold almost all of my 6mm stuff to beretzs though. I have been seeing a lot of 85gr partitions for sale around here. Don't know if $30/box is good, but if I had a 243 I'd be snagging those.
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

As long as you use a bullet suited for your specific impact velocity range, the little 6mm-.223 will work like a charm. Thanks to the inspiration of Bob Milek, I had a XP-100 barreled up with a 14" Shilen back in the 80s and later used 14 and 15" Contenders along with a custom Rem 788 with a 20" barrel. With that XP, I took quite a few animals, mostly exotics in the Texas Hill Country. I used H335 under the long-discontinued Sierra 80 grain SSP and always was rewarded with fantastic terminal performance. MV was 2705 fps. The large catalina billy below was taken at 230 yards, which was my longest shot on a big game animal with that rig. That XP was one of the most accurate firearms I have ever owned and would consistently produce eye-popping groups.

The 90 gr GameChanger is a very hard bullet and is meant for more velocity than the 6 x 45 can must with it...
it was designed with heavy game in mind, using max velocity out of a 6mm Rem or a 240 Weatherby or 6/06, or some other eqivalent.
I learned that after the fact, given bad information from one of Sierra's techs before using.
ONe of the ballistic tips or the Speer 105 SP or the 100 grainers is more in line with what I was thinking.
Shot the 223 today and beside the 6 x 45, it was an eye opener side by side.
The 6mm version is a big step up over the 223, even with heavier bullets.. especially in bolt actions.

for closer hunting, say 150 to 200 yds max...Low Recoil... or for youth and ladies.
14 grains of Alliant Steel, Rem 7 1/2 primer
1. 75 grain Speer HP. a). 2667 fps b.) 2622 fps c.) 2632 fps
2. 80 grain Speer SP. a.) 2563 fps b.) 2588 fps c.) 2576 fps
3. 85 grain Speer SP. a.) 2464 fps b.) 2469 fps c.) 2455 fps
something within there that would drop a blacktail or smaller White Tail or antelope. These bullets are softer, so they should open up pretty well at these velocities also, especially at 100 yds or so.. which is the distance a big percentage of deer are taken.

2. 90 gr Speer SP, Rem 7 1/2 primer, 25.5 IMR 4895 a.) 2817 fps b.) 2826 fps c.) 2825 fps

Ringing Steel 12 inch plates at 300 and 400 yds was no problem and if the way the steel plates were swinging, these rounds hit with authority at those distances. Big difference compared with 75 grain 22 caliber bullets, at the same distances out of a 223.

Rickt300,
The COAL of the cartridge with a 105 gr BTHP is 63.40mm
The barrel was chambered by Douglas to be able to take that cartridge length, on a bolt action Savage and also on a bolt action Ruger or Model 70 SA.
If one were to use it on an AR, then it would require a lengthened mag and action...
don't know if someone makes an AR 10 mag and action that would handle that requirement...
I'm not really an AR kind of guy, although Lord knows did I send a lot of rounds down range when I served Uncle Sam.
I don't hate ARs, even in the military I was not a spray and pray kind of guy...
in fact in basic, when we had to do night fire, we were given 66 rounds and were to do 3 round bursts, with 22 hits being a perfect score... which is usually impossible on night fire... instead I did single or two shot bursts while using my peripheral vision.. my score was in the low 30s.... I got chewed out for not following instructions... I just don't go out and sling lead..

Well to gain the required improvement in a cost effective way lengthening an AR action .25 would be pretty easy. If you start from scratch anyway. I'm not talking about something we would really need but the military wants more energy down range. In my personal opinion the AR10 was never a satisfactory system. It weighed as much as the M14 and had the same issues with the weight of ammunition and only 140 rounds as the standard battle carry. Slinging lead is one thing but having a third more rounds available is another.
