For the small crowd that might have an interest. Was chronographing these loads today with Benchmark Powder. Rifle is a 20 inch heavy varmint barrel, threaded on a Ruger Axxis Action. 20 inch in length and have a recessed crown on it. Settling on a load to carry out deer hunting this upcoming fall.
1. 27.5 grains of Benchmark, 80 grain Sierra SP Bullet: A:3057 fps B: 3078 fps C: 3062 fps
2. 26.2 grains of Benchmark, 85 gr Speer SP: A: 2837 fps B: 2836 fps C: 2872 fps
3. 26 grains of Benchmark, 90 gr Speer SP: A: 2789 fps B: 2766 fps C: 2782 fps
4. 26.5 grains of Benchmark, 100 gr SP Hornady: A: 2793 fps B: 2787 fps
5. 26.0 grains of Benchmark, 100 gr SP Hornady: A: 2768 fps B: 2781 fps
7. 25.0 grains of Benchmark, 105 A Max Hornady: A: 2640 fps B: 2640 fps ( again!)
Lake City brass on its 8th firing, all primer pockets tight before and after shooting the above.
Remington 7 1/2 primers used on each round.
Brass resized easily for next loading
Resized body with a Redding 223 Body Die, sized neck with a Hornady 6mm Neck Sizing Die/ Short Version.
Bullet seated with a RCBS Small Base Die Set Seater.
Gotta lot of contenders for this coming fall, and each of these loads have a lot more thump that a 223 round, without any noticeable increase in recoil in my Savage Bolt Action...They will easily put down a blacktail with proper bullet placement.
These loads have also allowed me to ring 12 inch steel plates at 300 and 400 yards off the bench at my local range, and surprisingly pretty flat shooting.
wish I'd have looked at a 6 x 45, 30 years ago or more...
Have received another barrel from Douglas, in a Predator Profile, 24 inches, 1 in 7 twist ( oh why the hell not? ) 11 degree crown. Have either a Ruger 77 mk 2 Stainless action, or a Model 70 Short Action Push Feed, that this barrel will go on, haven't decided which. This May be the last rebarrel I'll probably do...starting to reach that age, that I might be put out to pasture in the next couple of years. Going to keep hunting, until I can't no more. But for now, So Far So Good!

I was thinking seriously about a 6 ARC, as I also use a 6.5 Grendel...
But when I looked a little closer, I found the 6 x 45 does give up some velocity to the 6ARC, but the deal breaker was brass availability. Its not so much I was concerned about finding brass for the ARC, but what can't escape anyone's attention, is that brass for the 6 x 45 is essentially free, if you don't worry about it being once fired, and needs to be tumbled.
In the last 30 days I think I've picked up about 600 rounds of 223 brass at my local range, just laying around waiting for someone to " police up their brass", which I'll gladly substitute for them. I did buy a 6 x 45 small base die set from RCBS, for 30 bucks, and then picked up a Hornady neck sizer die for $20 or so... and I already had a Redding 223 body die.
So the cost to get into it also was readily fairly cheap. There is a lot of appeal in the economy of the entire thing.. plus I'm sitting on a very large selection and amount of 6 mm bullets from the lightest to the heaviest.
The biggest expense was on the barrel, which I got in 3 weeks from Douglas for a Savage Action., and then recently I just received another barrel in 6 x 45 from Douglas, 24 inches, 1 in 7 twist, Predator Contour size.
After poor factory ammo bullet performance in the 6mm's back in the 1970s on deer I have relegated the 6s to nothing bigger than coyotes but have killed a number of.them with the 6x45, 6mm-204 and 243. If I were to load a 6x45 for deer today I'd look seriously at the 85gr Partitions.
I’ve got a 14” 6TCU contender barrel that shoots 70BT’s very well. I shot one deer with it at 120 or so yards. Shot was quartering to me. Don’t remember the exact bullet track but I did put a nice hole through her heart. Hole was almost identical to the hole my cousin put in the heart of another doe 2 minutes earlier shot with a 14” contender in 35 Rem shooting 170 Speer FN. we were pretty sure Bob Milek was upstairs smiling down on us that day. My bullet did exit by the way.
I have also shot several deer with a 6 ackley at ranges from very close to probably 600 yards or more. Most always bang flops with 70BT’s.

Accuracy with this Douglas Barrel, leaves nothing to be desired.
Its been varmint level accuracy with anything I have fed it. 20 inch heavy barrel, with a 1 in 7 twist, with a tight bore, yet long throated, so bullet would never fit in an AR MAG or something as shallow as an AR chamber.
Haven't measured a COAL yet, will try and remember that, and post it later. Too late tonight at this point in time.

Still have an XP in 6-223/6x45. I had shot a 6TCU for a number of years in IHMSA , mostly 80 grain Speer hot core, fueled with AA2015. I always thought it was good cartridge and offered/gave more than its size let on. Had an extra XP action, a barrel was ordered and a 6TCU reamer was loaned to me. The gent that loaned it gave me some of his data with AA2200. I run 55-75 grain bullets out of the rifle setup. Years ago seemed like there was always a source for XP rifle stocks. Today those have all but dried up. I got lucky and a fellow bought an XP rifle setup and was putting it back as a pistol, McMillan stock and a Jewel trigger were purchased.
I always liked LC brass and Midway had some virgin, first I had seen in years. I have pushed it pretty hard and it’s still holding up.
The year after we got this rig put together was when the 6ARC came into the picture. I had always wanted a 6PPC. I had little interest in anything much over an 80 grain bullet, I know a lot of folks use the heavies, thanks but I will got to the BR case for that myself.
The 6-223/6x45/6TCU perform well. As mentioned brass is easy to procure. The masses have little interest in wildcats no matter how easy they are to work with. Most folks want to get a box or two of ammo at the local GS or mart and go play. I am glad myself to see a smaller 6mm available even if it is not an old favorite.
That's impressive velocity, not that far off factory loaded .243 Win ammo out of 20" barrels.
I still have no idea if these are varmint style bullets or not, but Midway still has some 6mm cal 80gr spitzers on clearance for $15/box. I ordered several hundred to try out, still haven't actually loaded any.

This afternoon, I went over to the range and shot 20 rounds. Was ringing steel at 300 yds, and chronographed 3 rounds...
Charge was 14 grains of Alliant Steel, bullets were 70 grain Nosler Varmageddons, sparked with a Win Small Pistol primer. Talk about little Deviation Spread: 1. 2670 fps 2. 2672 fps 3. 2671 fps
Hitting the 300 yd gong, showed this hits with much more authority, that a 50 or 55 grain SP, out of a 223, with a similar powder charge.

I have a bunch of the Speer 100 gr. BTSP's, well known to be pretty soft. I just obtained a 6 AR with a 20 inch barrel and mostly look at it as a coyote calling rifle and an anytime a hog shows up gun. Might but probably won't hunt deer with it. Any soft bullet would work. My real interest is getting 55 gr. Ballistic Tips or 58gr. Vmax's to run fast and accurate.

Tried shooting yesterday, but it wanted to rain the whole damn time!!! If you have not tried the 85gr Sierra gameking, I'd be trying that one. I don't know how the 90gr gamechanger would do, but that could also be a great candidate for a deer bullet. My 6x45 also really liked the 100gr Hornady btsp. Those were on sale last year for a damn good deal, so I bought about 600. I sold almost all of my 6mm stuff to beretzs though. I have been seeing a lot of 85gr partitions for sale around here. Don't know if $30/box is good, but if I had a 243 I'd be snagging those.
As long as you use a bullet suited for your specific impact velocity range, the little 6mm-.223 will work like a charm. Thanks to the inspiration of Bob Milek, I had a XP-100 barreled up with a 14" Shilen back in the 80s and later used 14 and 15" Contenders along with a custom Rem 788 with a 20" barrel.
With that XP, I took quite a few animals, mostly exotics in the Texas Hill Country. I used H335 under the long-discontinued Sierra 80 grain SSP and always was rewarded with fantastic terminal performance. MV was 2705 fps.
The large catalina billy below was taken at 230 yards, which was my longest shot on a big game animal with that rig. That XP was one of the most accurate firearms I have ever owned and would consistently produce eye-popping groups.

The barrel was chambered by Douglas to be able to take that cartridge length, on a bolt action Savage and also on a bolt action Ruger or Model 70 SA.
If one were to use it on an AR, then it would require a lengthened mag and action...
don't know if someone makes an AR 10 mag and action that would handle that requirement...

in fact in basic, when we had to do night fire, we were given 66 rounds and were to do 3 round bursts, with 22 hits being a perfect score... which is usually impossible on night fire... instead I did single or two shot bursts while using my peripheral vision.. my score was in the low 30s.... I got chewed out for not following instructions... I just don't go out and sling lead..

Well to gain the required improvement in a cost effective way lengthening an AR action .25 would be pretty easy. If you start from scratch anyway. I'm not talking about something we would really need but the military wants more energy down range. In my personal opinion the AR10 was never a satisfactory system. It weighed as much as the M14 and had the same issues with the weight of ammunition and only 140 rounds as the standard battle carry. Slinging lead is one thing but having a third more rounds available is another.

No doubt the 85 PT is a good bullet, for small capacity rounds, but at these speeds, I would trust a plain CC 85 BTHP GK, as they will expand great, and hold together fairly well. I think the GK will give a bit larger wound channel than the PT, and in this smallish 6 bore, that is welcome. You should have seen the hole in the deer my son shot at 300 yds with an 1885 LW in 243.......DRT. A second had it's on shoulder busted and went about 60 yds. I would stay in a middle range of weights, and construction if me.
FWIW, I dropped a south Tx deer with a 70 TNT from a 6BR around 200 yds, shredded both lungs, went about 50-60 yds. I shot behind the shoulder as you can imagine. But if you hit bone, it will most likely fail to go deep to vitals and disappoint.....

My Savage Bolt action will take a bullet with a 105 grain SP, with a COAL of 63.44 mm... which is too long for an AR Mag but does just fine in the Savage.. on the Model 70 SA, the 24 inch Douglas barrel will take a 6 x 45 with a COAL of 64.65mm
depending on the powder used, MV is in the 2550 fps to 2650 fps range.. with either H 322 or Benchmark...
with AR Comp, it'll run 2800 according to my chronograph, and a friends Lab Radar chrony... 25.5 gr charge. a 100 grain Hornady SP will exceed 2800 fps... not far behind a 243...
I've loaded 243 for kids with an MV of 2500 to 2600 fps, with 100 grain bullets or less that have worked just fine, in taking down deer, to include some pretty heavy ones for a blacktail... 30 grains of 4198 or RL 7.
Proof in the pudding will be this fall by dropping one myself.. I think a whole host of bullets will work with this cartridge, for taking an Oregon Blacktail.
Heck even Schtick could take one at 1000 yds with one of these rounds... ( that's 100 yds for you and me and the rest of us... but in Alaska on PoW Island, "1000 yds" is a 100 yds down in the lower 48 )....

Unlike metal plates, most game at short to medium range don't tend to wait around once they know you are there for you to measure the distance with your range finder, then play around with your dials on your scope so that you can take the shot at a deer that's long gone. You are far better off using medium weight hunting projectiles for medium ranges with their flatter trajectory at those distances, so that you can just quickly point and shoot. This fantasy world of yours where you pretend that you do a lot of shooting at game at 600 yards is completely divorced from reality...you never, ever shoot game at those distances. Now if you were to shoot game at those distances, then longer heavier high bc bullets would be the way to go, but you don't do that, you just pretend to...hence the name Little Liar Larry. And many of these match bullets, while they may often work on game, do not have the consistently good terminal performance as dedicated hunting bullets (which are designed to have good terminal performance, and as such, tend to have lower b.c.'s because of the tip design).

The two barrels I have in 6 x 45 are long throated for the two bolt actions I have them on...powder is up to the shoulder, and the base of the bullet is seated to where its bottom is at the shoulder... there is some, but very little compression of the powder....velocity is not that far behind of the 243... its a similar concept used by the Creedmoor/ Needmore.
Anything from 85 grain to 105 grain are more than enough...the barrels will even take a 115 gr Berger, with little protrusion into the case....
The case will even work with 70 to 80 grain bullets for a blacktail.

I'll start with some lighter (70-85gr) bullets for her and see how things go. In the past, the 100gr RN has been the Hammer of Thor on deer and pronghorn, out of a 15" 243 Encore. Unless you're shooting critters over 300 yard, don't forget about that bullet. My longest handgun shot on game, was the Encore 243 with a 100gr RN at 286 yards. Pronghorn buck was dead before he hit the ground. The RN is the Rodney Dangerfield of bullets.

Those blacktail in southern Oregon can grow quite large, much bigger than the tiny Sitka blacktail in Alaska that Little Liar Larry pots at. I used a 90 grain Scirocco on a nice buck there at over 200 yards.
I know... have lived here 28 years now....have shot a couple over 225 pounds on the hoof and have seen a few ones bigger than that... but most are in the 90 to 120 pound ranges....
have shot a bunch in the 150 to 180 pound ranges. Not as many around, as when I moved here from the midwest in 1995, but there are still quite a few, so its not hard hunting...
Most of the ones I've shot have been taken in a cartridge that was loaded with 30 grains of 4198 or RL 7. from 243 to 30/06. from ranges out to 250 and 300 yds...
done a lot of loading for kids in Boy Scouts, or let them load them, with me supervising and dad attending...
They've done pretty darn well, because the loads are very shootable and yet are very lethal due to the low recoil making bullet placement very easily....

I have got no shortage of bullets for this caliber....got a couple boxes of the discontinued 100 grain Hornady RN... and 5 or 6 boxes of the Sierra 100 gr SMP... a bullet I really like. If I could shoot 20 deer this year, ( in places like Alabama where that is legal ) I could take down deer and not use the same type of bullet twice...
There are few bad choices at all for this cartridge.. and at the range most deer are taken ( 100 yds and under ) it is head and shoulders over a 223. and with a bolt action, my only regret is not looking closely at this cartridge 30 years ago...
If I had had to serve in combat with the AR, I'd have felt a lot more comfortable with it chambered in a 6 x 45, with 100 to 105 grain bullets and a little longer magazine in cartridge length.
Hell I have plenty of deer migrating thru the property daily.. why would it be that I'd never point a rifle at one?

Seafire; Do you see an issue with a 19" barrel?? My wife's 22" barrel came in and she says it is muzzle heavy. It is on a Marlin XS7, factory contour, 8" twist. Currently in the youth model tupperware stock w/o glass it is 6 lb 12 oz. Plinking ammo will be 70-80gr, and hunting ammo 100gr. I can brake it or "can" it for her, but both will add weight where she doesn't want it. I don't think recoil and blast will be too much for her. Her only other centerfire experience is with a braked 7-30 Waters Contender.
PS If you build the heavy on the Win push feed I have a stock for ya!
Bart , I have a 20 inch barrel on the Savage Axxis in the 6 x 45, with a one in 7 twist. Heaviest bullets I shoot are the 105 Hornady HP/BT....and the Sierra 107 gr BTHP....which do just fine.. so does the various 100 gr bullets I have shot out of both rifles. I don't think you'll be handicapped with a 19 inch barrel.
Let me know how much you want for the stock for the Winchester Push Feed. I'd be interested in it for sure.

We can kill 3 does a day and 2 bucks per season, gun season alone I can kill 170 deer. From what I've seen, 250 and in with 95% of the shots under 100yards and in you can kill em with about anything. As long as you have a bullet that will reliably expand, just go kill schit. I'll kill more in the month of December than most will in a few years of hunting, and I've done it with everything 22 cal up to 30 cal and they all died the same bc be damned.

Just started with my 6x45, it's a conglomeration of parts mostly aero and midwest Industries, with a mcgowen precision barrel. It will most likely stay with a steady diet of speer 85 gr jsp, they are cheap and will do anything I require of it and then some. It doesn't take much to kill a deer. The 75 gr hollow points shoot pretty well to but I don't trust them for much over Armadillos or coyotes.
It's a rather nice chambering in a Turnbolt,but not worth a fhuqk in a Krunchenticker and unable to keep pace with a 223 there. Hint.

I can't say your wrong at all, I kill plenty with a 55 and 65 gr out of a 223, but I wanted one so, what the hell, might as well. I may build an arc next to go along with my howa mini, but I'll still be shooting soft points or AccuBombs most likely, they just plain work for what I do.

I rather like the Howie Mini's and the 6 ARC is simply fhuqking SPECTACULAR. They've the RPM and the mechanical upgrade to JO V2 BDL bottom,greatly bolsters integrity,ergo's and of course COAL. 112 Smooches are amazingly uniform,with but .010" COAL deviation in the extremes I've measured and miles of land chasing room remaining in the 'box. More than "few" of these rifles in the neighborhood. Hint.

Pard was Hunting it and upon return with he and a Victim upon his 4-wheeler,the rifle got looped in Alders and dog knotted right proper and he ended up driving over the top of it. Dented the objective and bent erector spindle. Rifle quit shooting and turns out barrel was bent,though scope was fine. Hint.

The ARC is legit and nicely covered via logistics. It also shines brightly in a Krunchenticker,which never hurts an equation. Factory Fodder is actually superb,though I don't shoot it,but lots of pards do(Horny 105/08's). The Howie Mini is a Skookum parcel,other than not being S/S. No thang to feed same via AICS and I do a bunch of that,rather happily. Hint.
The Dasher now has killer Alpha brass available to it and that streamlines much. They also offer Vanilla BR and everything I've shot with Alpha has been fhuqking exceptional,in all flavors. Dasher pre-fits are easily sourced,so there's options there and it will be an AICS DBM show,as a path of least resistance. In my AI/AT it will be AW double stack mags and I'll be using HRD followers/springs. I've whistled a bunch of Dummies and feed/function in Dasher is flawless. Hint.
