Recommedations to re barrel a Ruger #1. Who has done the work for you? I have a #1AB needing a new barrel.

My friend is a 'smith who likes #1 reworks. He's done several for me. He says rebarreling a #1 is easy as long as the calibers are of similar diameter. If they. aren't, then extractor modification may be necessary, which complicates things a bit. Mine all have McGowan barrels and all shoot less than 0.5MOA. Any better gunsmith should be able to do this job. Notice I said "better". My friend doesn't take mail in work and I'm not advertising for him. I'm just passing along information about the subject. The quality of the barrel is most important

Easiest way is to have the factory barrel contour copied, and then have the factory quarter rib installed on the new barrel. You won't have sights to mess with, so that saves quite a bit of hassle.

I do my own, but If I needed one done I would contact Eben Arthur Brown at EBCo, he manufactures the BF pistols and rifles and does #1s. He really does understand single shots.

PacNor will rebarrel them. They did a near-perfect job building the barrel, chambering it to 6.5X55, and installing it in a Ruger #3 for me. It has turned out to be by far my favorite rifle. Check out their website. Quality products. Quality work.

That’d be the cheap/easy button and the route that I’d go.

PacNor is not exactly cheap when you add in the cost of drilling and tapping for the scope rail, but they do a nice job. ![[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]](https://i.imgur.com/ZJGpQSI.jpg) I went the unconventional route for a single shot with the synthetic stocks, but I made this for hunting.

I've used the #1 platform 3 times for custom builds. Two were originally chambered for the 220 Swift and they became a 7MM-08 and a 300 Savage. I don't recall what the original chamber was for the third but it became a 300 H&H. I used a McGowen barrel for the 7MM-08 and Douglas premium barrels for the other two.

here is another thought to do ? i have a nice 270 Win. that i just sent to Jes to be rebored to a 35 Whelen so don`t disguard your barrel you could change it to a larger caliber , even it was shot out , his prices are great for a rebore. Pete53

I've had several No. 1s re-barreled by Rich Reily at High Tech Customs in Colorado Springs and he's done many for others. He normally uses Lilja barrels and those have all shot well for me. The 6.5-06 K1B he did for me about ten years ago is probably the most accurate rifle I own. He typically sends the barrel to Lilja to match the profile exactly and I have him leave the sights and barrel bands on what he takes off in the event that I or somebody else down the road wants to return to the original chambering. Another K1B I just got back from him in 444 Marlin has a Douglas barrel and cost $975 that included remounting the quarter rib. He also will work No. 1 actions/triggers, does a lot of bolt actions (he is especially experienced with Rem 700), and usually has a bunch of barrel threading jobs lined up. He was re-boring a shot-out Winchester 90 for a liner when I saw him this week. Richie is also a professional elk guide on a big private ranch south of Pike's Peak, and guides pheasant hunting at other times. With all the work he has in and out of the shop, don't expect a lightning fast turnaround for re-barreling. I think the fastest I ever got one back from him was seven or eight months. I don't mind the wait and he's close to me so I don't need to ship anything.
One tip I can offer is to consider the rim size of the donor rifle chambering compared to the new chambering - Richie tells me that No. 1 extractors can be hard to come by these days. I'd prefer to avoid having a custom extractor made and modifying the donor extractor would complicate returning the rifle to the original chambering if that were a consideration for you. For example, I had him molest a K1A for me several years ago and will sell the original barrel with that rifle when the time comes since they are not common models.
If I ever have time to figure out how to post pics here, I'll show a few of mine. If there's a tutorial post, I've missed it.
