My dad and I have never done any elk hunting, but would like to start. I am wondering which CO units to apply for a tag in. We do not have any preference points, I know that it would be quite a while before we could realistically expect any big bulls. Really, we are mainly wanting to go and enjoy the mountains and the camping. My question is where could we go this year, on public land, without a guide, and have the best chance at a small bull or cow while accumulating points for a better area?

You are planning a hunt for fall 2008 / right?
The first thing I would do is spend $100 and join the Huntin Fool. It is s reasearch report for western big game hunting.

Most areas , you can buy an OTC tag for bulls. I would wait until the brochures come out in april and research the late hunts in more accesible areas. I can't recomend any, as I usually hunt futher back in, unless you want to rent horses

If God wanted you to walk and carry things on your back, He would not have invented stirrups and pack saddles
