A 4 x 5.5' roll of good fertilized UGA tested Bermuda grass hay is $75. We have some first cutting with a little trash at $40 a roll and some decent mixed hay at $60. Our first cutting wasn't very good but the second is going to be really good. Thankfully we've had over 3" of rain in the last couple of weeks.

Haven't had time to look, here.
Luckily had a good enough year, last year, that we kept the cows on pasture all winter.
So little snow, we only had to feed hay once, although we went through a lot of cake!
Early showers got us an early start this year, but fizzled out. We'll see how the monsoons go.
As far as the yearlings, we fed extra hay - couldn't get them up on the mountain until a week ago (instead of ~5/15 - 20)
The hay we bought for cows is still mostly under the barns, though.

We'll be starting to look for hay, soon - for next year's yearlings, and possibly cows.
Few years we don't have to take the cows to the hay - we're glad when they come!

I need to find a ride for my small squares from Minot ND to Oklahoma. I have a guy that buys them from me and resells them somewhere down there. I need to cut out the middle man. Our market up here seems pretty saturated, we get 5-7 dollars a bale for grass and alfalfa grass mix. And it don’t fly off the shelf at that price.

Yessir.

Life in the north ain’t for pussies.

I calculated this last winter we spent 2.8X for hay over ‘21-‘22.

We also spent way more feeding the cows the last couple years.

And at least you can eat the cow.

Have not had any cut hay yet here. They won't quote a price. Last years 3x3x8, 800 pound were going for $190. Some of these guys are advertising them as 3 x3 's, but they are 33" x 7 ft long and won't go over 700 pounds. Small squares are running $15-$16 per bale and they are only 55 pound bales at that..

When it does dry out there will be more hay than they can sell, but they won't drop the price

Normally...3 cuts

This summer

Have fresh alfalfa seed planted

So it will be mid August (guessing) for 1st cut

Maybe squeeze 2nd cut of late September

Watering the hell outta it with our free unrestricted water usage

Dam quits spilling....canal company keeps track of your water usage after that

Not metered.......they count sprinkler heads....

40 heads running 6 GPM at 24 hrs x 10 days

You do the math............

Is it 3,456,000 gallons or about 3+ inches on 40 acres? I was haphazardly doing the arithmetic on a paper towel. A million gallons of water doesn't go far on dry ground.

Some parts of MT have grass like no one has ever seen. Some of the hi country grass is up to my arm pits.
Crazy good year, better if it stays dry for a week or ten days to get the first cutting in.
