Just curious ?
Neighbor just sold these two string 1st cut bales @ $6/pop
Lightly rained on after bailed...approx 600 bales
Second cut will be available if interested
$8 per bail in the field. Costs $35 PER ROLL if hired out.
Back when I was in the game I sold it for $6 out the barn $5 in the field

Curious. Is there a nutritional difference between cuts on alfalfa. Also how many cuttings do you get in you area, Tikkanut?
I've been makin' hay since 1953, it's easier nowadays.
1st cut of fescue/orchardgrass, 35 dollars per 4'x5' round bale.
Curious. Is there a nutritional difference between cuts on alfalfa. Also how many cuttings do you get in you area, Tikkanut?
Normally...3 cuts
This summer
Have fresh alfalfa seed planted
So it will be mid August (guessing) for 1st cut
Maybe squeeze 2nd cut of late September
Watering the hell outta it with our free unrestricted water usage
Dam quits spilling....canal company keeps track of your water usage after that
Not metered.......they count sprinkler heads....
40 heads running 6 GPM at 24 hrs x 10 days
You do the math............
Haven't seen hay prices yet.
But at the Co-op farm store I recently paid $11 for a friggen 3 wire bale of straw.
$11 a bale for a waste product.
Sheesh and double sheesh.........................LGB
Again
Want/need 2nd cut alfalfa ?
Small bales
pick up in field..........
Decent grass hay is $80 for a 1250lb +- bale here.
It's turned off hot and dry. Again. Made a good first cutting, but nothing is growing now.
I've got 40 acres to give away to anyone who wants to cut and bale it.

$75 per 5x5 bale is selling, see it advertised up to $125 but those aren’t selling yet. We are getting 1-2 bales per acre. A normal year is 5-6. A lot of good momma cows are headed to market if we don’t get a rain.

Yeah, it's imported from somewhere.
The folks around here are just getting their first cuts baled up, grass hay and alfalfa. And I'm pretty sure some of the folks that cut a 10 days to 2 weeks ago might have lost some on the ground in the rain trying to get a jump on things. The recent cuts are getting turned, a couple of fields were baled as I saw on the way to town today.
Cold rainy weather lately for here, nearly froze last night, 36F on the back porch this morning with 99% humidity, which ain't normal in these parts.
Chummed this young buck in with pumpkins

Heated water tub during the winter
I sold alfalfa silage for $65.. a 4'X 5 ' round bale last fall. Second cut alfalfa hay will go about the same. We will be lucky to get a second cut this year. Have not got a first yet. Stuff does`nt grow very well with out rain.

1st cut of fescue/orchardgrass, 35 dollars per 4'x5' round bale.
We sold some of our first cut fescue/clover, with a little wheat mixed in, for $50 a roll delivered. It was also 4X5 round bales.

Priced from 60. to 100 for 4x5 round bales of mixed grass. Selling mine for $65. here in SW Missouri. Bad year as production down to late winter and lack of rain early on. Prospects for fall cutting are extremely poor. GW
Most of the first cut hay was pretty good here, but prospects for a second cutting vary as we went about a month with no rain. We're slipping into a drought just like we did last year about this time. Hopefully that won't be the case.
I started knocking hay down last Friday and Saturday.
Glad I only cut 35 acres as we got douched out last night and it looks like rain for the next 3-4 days.
We are still feeding about 40 head of late calving cows and just ran out of (2022)alfalfa bales so I baled up 9 bales yesterday at 20-40% moisture. We'll feed them up before they go bad.
Heavy bastards, bet the first ones weigh 1800lbs before I turned down the pressure. It was really nice hay, around 2 ton/acre but it's going to be low quality now. Oh well, we'll take the rain.
Price-wise I see the internet says $250-200/ton.
Here in Oklahoma I get $9 per small square in the field
and $200-250 per
ton for big rounds. I have 30 or more customers I’m having a
hard time supplying. Another 20 on a waiting list. I only have
30 acres. Last 2 years I’ve gotten 6 cuttings although the
October is not much.
the 1st cutting is late and just now being cut. We've had a lot of rain and much of the hay got wet. Good stuff is going to be expensive and there will be a lot of crap on the market.
Hay is often the most expensive part of a cattle ration.

We're going to have to hire a plane to spray about 120 acres of hay barley that is getting attacked by hoppers.

You fugger.
I don't even have my corn planted yet!
We got out little 40 acre patch of silage corn in last Friday.
Dad ran the planter and had it done in a day.
I pre-worked that field twice this spring with a toolbar before we got to it. Weeds, weeds, weeds...
Raining dolla bills again right now.....lol
It's not freezing at night up your way still, or nearly so, like it has been here?
Send some of that Rain our way, "Cousins.!!
No Geno. Been cool though.
Thankfully.
We have missed most of the showers/rain. If it wasn't kinda unseasonably cold we would be peckered.
They called for 3(!) days of heavy rain a week ago. So we seeded some late spring grain kinda shallow.
Fugging wheel tracks won't come up.
Not whining!

Hopefully you hay pimps can choke on it! Hahaha!
Geno, I don't think it's been frosty here in close to 30 days ago?
40-50-60 degree nights lately.
Really nice today, high of around 70-75F with a nice tail wind while we moved some cows.
Dang,
here we have another freeze warning for the first morning of summer.
Yippee. I get to go cover all the plants in the garden..................................again.

Well, the house side of the property, not in the flood zone for insurance purposes is a few feet higher than the garden across the creek side. And the creek bottom is 8-10' lower than the high side of the property in places.
I think the road out front is about 4440??
and our skeeters don't care about the elevation.
The sagebrush does though. Lucky to find one 2' tall on this side of the creek. Over in the good dirt of the flood zone, I have some towering one's about 6' tall.
Thanks for your valuable contribution.

Told my wife last Sunday that I'm in love with Dustin Johnson's wife.
She asked whose that?
I said that's you if I was really good at golf.....lol
A 4 x 5.5' roll of good fertilized UGA tested Bermuda grass hay is $75. We have some first cutting with a little trash at $40 a roll and some decent mixed hay at $60. Our first cutting wasn't very good but the second is going to be really good. Thankfully we've had over 3" of rain in the last couple of weeks.
Haven't had time to look, here.
Luckily had a good enough year, last year, that we kept the cows on pasture all winter.
So little snow, we only had to feed hay once, although we went through a lot of cake!
Early showers got us an early start this year, but fizzled out. We'll see how the monsoons go.
As far as the yearlings, we fed extra hay - couldn't get them up on the mountain until a week ago (instead of ~5/15 - 20)
The hay we bought for cows is still mostly under the barns, though.
We'll be starting to look for hay, soon - for next year's yearlings, and possibly cows.
Few years we don't have to take the cows to the hay - we're glad when they come!
We bled in soybean straw when the calves get older.
I need to find a ride for my small squares from Minot ND to Oklahoma. I have a guy that buys them from me and resells them somewhere down there. I need to cut out the middle man. Our market up here seems pretty saturated, we get 5-7 dollars a bale for grass and alfalfa grass mix. And it don’t fly off the shelf at that price.
If you boys are sitting’ down, I’ll tell ya….
This past winter hay l was…
wait for it…
$960/T.
Not a typo.
You must really love those horses!

Yessir.
Life in the north ain’t for pussies.
I calculated this last winter we spent 2.8X for hay over ‘21-‘22.
We also spent way more feeding the cows the last couple years.
And at least you can eat the cow.
1st cut of fescue/orchardgrass, 35 dollars per 4'x5' round bale.
I paid $1,700 for three ton of orchard grass.
Pricey this year.
BMT
Don't expect cheap hay from iowa this year can't even feed the gophers
Have not had any cut hay yet here. They won't quote a price. Last years 3x3x8, 800 pound were going for $190. Some of these guys are advertising them as 3 x3 's, but they are 33" x 7 ft long and won't go over 700 pounds. Small squares are running $15-$16 per bale and they are only 55 pound bales at that..
When it does dry out there will be more hay than they can sell, but they won't drop the price

Is it 3,456,000 gallons or about 3+ inches on 40 acres? I was haphazardly doing the arithmetic on a paper towel. A million gallons of water doesn't go far on dry ground.
When we flood irrigate it's about 4500gpm.

Is there any problem with getting salt with that water?
River water, no problems.
Our salt problems are on low spots in dry land fields.
We do have some lower yielding hard pan streaks on irrigated fields but that unrelated.

Have not irrigated yet this year. Will likely get first cutting without any irrigation. It just keeps raining a little here and there. Just hope it shuts off so we can get the 1st put up next week.
Then I will get our pipe laid out and get after it. Bought a new pressure booster pump for my gated pipe. Updated design that I am hoping cures some of my problems on 1 field. If it does, I will get that pump paid off maybe this year. Certainly halfway trough next year I will be money ahead.
When I lived south of Albuquerque, I got five cuttings of alfalfa each year. Irrigated off a cement ditch that made 3500gpm. Right now I have grass that is approaching 4 ft tall, but there is water laying in it.
Flood irrigation here is almost gone
Some places may still

I'm paying 180/ton for grass here. Going to go up to. Trying to cut every little patch I can.
I need to ask my nephew what he just paid for the round bales he just brought in off his girlfriend's field. Farmers are just now getting in first crop alfalfa. I told him to stock up if he can ,we have two big barns to store hay now. Most the crops are in tough shape around here as we just had our first soaker in six weeks. My niece and nephew and a few others just raise heifers now and show some of them. They seem to do ok at it as long as the feed prices don't go off the charts.
Beware of moldy alfalfa. Do not buy from a producer
you don’t trust. Mold in alfalfa can cause abortion in
goats and cows. All horse people I know have a
Zero tolerance for mold.
2 or 3 wire/twine bales of alfalfa is $280/ton.
It took a while to get to 65 degree nights here so our fields have been real slow growing. Friday I was quoted $50 per round bale on a 12 bale goose neck.At an actual sale price. that was a first cut for a guy that had some skinny cattle.
