I worry that a widespread and extended power outage might affect natural gas pumping. No NG equals no generator.
I think a diesel generator is more reliable and the fuel is safer and can be stored longer.
There are not many diesel generators on the market in the size range appropriate for a house.
Any recommendations?

Tikka, we can get ethanol free 91 octane. Haven't bought Stabil in probably 10 years.

It's the ONLY gasoline I will buy for anything.

Zero fuel/carb issues.

I have a 5-6 year old 'brand new' Honda generator stored in our garage. Every couple years I fire it up just to make sure it runs. No problems with the old ass fuel in it.

Anyway you cut it a generator is a short time proposition. We've never been without electricity for more than three days. LP gas will be my choice when I get one. When we built the house, I had a manual transfer switch wired in and the gas tank is on that side of the house. The regulator is not far from the power interface. All i have to do is pour a slab for it to sit on and get the gas plumbed to it. I've been putting it off but it could've come in pretty handy here a few times. I just am not sure which brand to buy. Generac seems to be popular around here but I'm not sure. Having them worked on is another thing.

So our eth free is only 88

Yours is 91

Elevation difference I guess

SLC is 4500'..........

St George is 2700'

Here in Podunk it's 6K'

Higher the elevation the lower the octane needed

Read it on the internet so must be true

Anyhow......Eth Free (Clear) smells better

We have been using the portable gen for years, it's just a pain to set up .
We are in Florida so --
Wonder why the propane is so high? We had 2 large tanks installed and filled for 1k.

One important point. I would think NG if you use it everyday. Propane would be good too especially if it is used mainly for power outages.

It's a great business. The high dollar 2nd and 3rd home here often have high dollar generators that serve no real purpose because nobody is in them in the winter when 90% of the power loss occurs here. Even then power is normally restored within hours or a couple days at most. They have them serviced every year which is the only time they are ever operated.

I just can't justify the cost. We may lose power twice a year and a couple years ago it was out for about 12 hours. Freezers will be fine and I can live without power for a half a day.

We do have a 12k portable with a lock out on the main box. I'll run the house for about an hour every month or so.

Remember, it's good to start a Portable once in a while but you also have to work the genset also.

Helps when my wife doesn't work so she's either home or close so she can power the house if need be if I'm at work

Keep an eye on the fuel and maybe get it tested once a year.

Algae can and will be a MOFO.

I was in Louisiana for Gustav. 2.5 weeks without power, the first few weeks of September. You could only buy 5 gallons of fuel at a time. It kept a 5000W gen and a window a/c unit humming and kept our fridge/freezer up, but the fuel situation was always tenuous.

I'll take my chance with NG.

Very good idea. We had exercise timers on all of the sewer lift stations where I used to work. Could vary the time and frequency at which they ran.
