There was a report that the vessel was trying to abort the mission shortly before the communication was lost, just before the KB. Not sure if that was confirmed at all, or why the rattletrap's safety measures didn't work and send it back above sea water.
There was also mention of an inflatable balloon as a safety device. Would a balloon even inflate at anything close to that depth? Maybe they were hearing some cracking sounds pre-implosion? Anyone interested in the cold war and submarine warfare knows somewhat of the capabilities of the SOSUS network.
