Ill be spending the first week of the Pennsylvania Buck Season hunting a 10-point whitetail buck with my 1953 late model EG in .300 Savage that has a 3x-9x Bushnell variable scope on it.
Good Hunting!!!

99 Series A, .358 Winchester, 280 Gr WLN GC from Mt Baldy- Feral Hogs and Whitetails. My only choice of gun until I find a shooter TD, in 250 or 300. If you would like to hunt with cast bullets try Mt Baldy. Great folks and some fine looking hammers (bullets ). No I didn't get free bullets for this. Good hunting. Rusty...
You could lessen your .358's recoil and have a longer ranged and even greater whitetail and hog rifle by using Nosler's 225 grain Partition Bullet that you could drive at a much higher muzzle velocity. This would increase your rifle's point-blank-range considerably as well.
My ballistics program indicates that if your rifle fires a 225 grain Nosler Partition bullet at 2375 fps, youd have a point-blank-range of 235 yards. Heres the breakdown:
50 yards = +1.53 inches
100 yards = +2.87 inches
150 yards = +2.39 inches
200 yards = 0.00 inches
230 yards = - 2.46 inches
240 yards = - 3.43 inches
250 yards = - 4.49 inches
300 yards = -11.34 inches
This means that out to almost 240 yards, you could hold dead on your target and the bullet strike would not be more than 3 inches high (at 110 yards) or 3 inches low (at 235 yards).
Just my 2 worth but its something to think about.

I will be going with my 1955 F model 99 in 300 Savage with a 2.5X Weaver scope. But just for fun I am taking my 1917 model 99 in 22 Hi Power that is sporting a Redfield 56S receiver peep sight. It shoots a very tight group at 100 yards with Factory Norma 5.6x52R 70 grain bullits. My reloads can't touch the factory stuff for accuracy. The 22 Hi Power has not been bloody yet and I really want to take a deer with it if the perfect broadside shot under 80 yards shot should present itself. I have taken deer with all my Savage 99's and even a model 20 in all Savage calibers except for the 22 hi power. The 99s are my favorite deer rifles. If I had to pick one that I feel the best about using it would be a very clean 1899 G model made in 1925 in 303 Savage. It has a Lyman folding tang and it likes 150 grain Hornady round nose interlocks with Reloder 15 powder. I also have a 410 takedown barrel that has been fitted to the gun if I should want to take some ruff grouse for a camp meal if the opportunity presents itself. The model 1899 with the 410 barrel makes a nice travel gun in its takedown travel case with an extra compartment for the 410 barrel. It makes quite a conversation piece at my deer camp in Michigan.

Hi, I will be hunting Trophy mule deer, non-trophy (does) mule deer and white tail deer with the following depending on the weather conditions: late model "E", .300 savage, 20" barrel, 1.5-4x Leupold, handload of 4064 and remington 150 gr. coreloct; 1958 "F", .308, 4x weaver, federal factory 150 gr.; 1953 R, .300 savage, Lyman Alaskan 2.5x, factory remington 150 gr.; 1938 "T", .300 savage, original iron sights, remington factory 150 gr. I also use a post war EG in 250 or a 99C in 22-250 for rabbits/coyotes/foxes.
Good hunting! LawMan

Lawman, what happened to the 358 you picked up over at gunnutz?
Is it to heavy or do you just like showing it off?

Hi Maddog, I usually only use cast bullets in my .35 cal rifles and am presently out of them. I have been working on finishing the basement in my house and landscaping so have not had a chance to cast for a while. I also use a .35 Whelen and have shot several deer with cast in it. I will use the .358 next year after I have a chance to work up some decent loads. I use the RCBS 250 grain mould and have had good success with it.
Regards, LawMan

I'll be heading for the North Maine woods for deer with my 99F in .308 which I bought new in 1960. It has a Leupold 4X on top and my handloads use Nosler 165 grain partitions. Besides deer this rifle and handload have also taken three caribou in northern Quebec (the longest shot being about 250 yards). Whenever I hunt deer in the Northeast the 99 is the first rifle out of the gun cabinet.

blitzen,
I'm also likely to take my 99 to Maine -- .300 Savage with either 165 Partitions or 165 Hornady SPs.
What kind of powder do you use, and what velocity do you get?
Where in Maine do you hunt?

Hi John,
In recent years we have hunted in the Patten--Shin Pond area. Back in the 70's we hunted in the Jackman area. My uncle used to have a camp on Parlin Pond just south of Jackman on Rte. 201. There aren't many deer in the Shin Pond area, only 5 or 6 per square mile according to the most recent survey. However, when you do see one it's usually a monster. The area is loaded with moose and the bird hunting is decent. There certainly are better deer hunting areas in Maine, but we have found a camp where the food is good and the people who run it are great (Mt. Chase Lodge). If I ever draw a moose permit that would be the place I would prefer to hunt.
My load for the .308 is 41.0 grains of IMR 3031 and a Remington 9 1/2 primer. For practice I shoot the Hornady 165 grain BTSP and for hunting the Nosler Partition in the same weight. Groups at 100 yards average 1 1/4-1 1/2 inches off the bench. I recently purchased a chronograph but I have not yet chronographed this load. My guess is about 2625-2650 fps at the muzzle.

California Mulies and bear in X9A. I will have my 56 .300 F model and my son will be shooting (hopefully) a new 99C model in .308. Both will have factory loads and both will have Leupolds, 1-5 on mine and 3-9 on his. However... for them long sage bush, wide-open shots, the .300 Wby might see some action.

Deer: in the Upper Deschutes Unit near Bend, OR.
Wild Pigs: in Northern California (Spring).
I hunt both with a Model 99C in 308 with Leupold 3x9x40.
