Thanks to Richard Near of Near Manufacturing in Camrose, Alberta, Canada. If it is on his shelf it can be FEDEX-ed to you in a day or two after a telephone call. Custom orders to special specifications might take a little longer. The Picatinny rails have a recoil stop on the bottom, SUPER DUTY. Stainless steel with matte black nitride finish or left shiny. Best value you will find. After superb results with a long-action Winchester M70 from SC/FN, I was elated to find the WSM-action M70 Classic as well as the commercial M98/FN/PH Mauser were on the shelf in Camrose. Here is the Mauser:

Near makes some of the most aesthetically pleasing scope mounting stuff I have ever seen. If I was to ever consolidate all my rifles down to one or two bolt guns, they'd be full custom and I'd look for a compatible Near product.

Ditto RiverRider, thanks. Here is what hooked me, from the Near site: The most common question concerning our base is "Do I need to have my rifle modified to use 8x40 screws?" We suggest that if your rifle has factory 6x48 scope mounting holes that 6x48's are very adequate. In the fall of 2001 a government ER Team vehicle rolled over and in the process a Litton 6x night scope was crushed and destroyed. The rifle barrel had been rammed into the soil up to the fiberglass stock. Even though the stock was gouged and the scope was torn completely off, our base remained secure to the M70 rifle with only 4 of 6x48 screws. The rifle was sent to the armoury shop, cleaned, inspected and had it's day scope bolted on. Upon test firing, the rifle shot to zero and was returned to service. Our Winchester , Remington and Weatherby bases all have an integral recoil shoulder that reduces the shear stress on the mounting screws. We are confident that 6x48 screws are very adequate. Our bases are engineered to accept both 6x48 and 8x40 screws. It remains the customers choice to use what they have confidence with. Orders are tailored to match your rifle and optics. Call or e-mail us today and tell us what you need. We guarantee that once you have our base in your hands, you will know you have made the right choice. We guarantee total customer satisfaction in the fit, finish and performance of all of our products. Some of the aesthetics RiverRider spoke of, all-in-one "integral" rings and base with recoil stops, amazing: Or, if you gotta have QD: Similar aesthetics of the fishing sort at Fortress Lake, AB: I could go for some of all that.

I think NEAR's products are some of the nicest looking mounts in the business. I'd guess they are some of the strongest as well since they are an all steel product. In most cases I try to avoid extra weight of steel mounts unless they are a smaller mount/ring. In the past I considered checking with about the possibility of making a very low 2 piece pic mount like the Burris for Fieldcrafts: https://www.burrisoptics.com/mounting-systems/xtreme-tactical-two-piece-base...after Chris made his rings I never pursued it with them.

He builds the alpha hunter from some exotic material. The one I bought 2 years ago weighed 2.5 ounces for a Mark V and fit perfectly.

I owned a Near rail for my Sako 75. It worked great! Those Alphamounts are nice! Are the prices listed on the price sheet Canadian Dollars or US Dollars?

He’s definitely one of the most knowledgeable folks I’ve ever talked to in the firearms industry. I had a weird situation where a previous owner had drilled new bridge holes in a M70 of mine. No one could figure it out. He did in 30 seconds and gave me a thorough history of Winchester hole spacing history!

Do the Near products come with a Halo?

Richard, does scope mounts like nobody else IMO. I am a repeat offender of his mounts. I still remember the first time I installed an Alpha mount on one of my Mark V Magnums with his hammerlock lugs. I put it on the rifle without a screw and held the rifle upside down and the mount stayed in place. I recommend them to everyone I know.
I remember when I used to put Redfield dove tail mounts and junior bars on everything. Look back on all scope scratching non zero holding and wonder what I the heck I was thinking. Near mounts are a work of art in comparison.
Good luck and shoot straight y'all

I just cannot put a rail on my rifles and have not found a reason to change.

No rails for me on hunting rifles, but I like the look of the unit above with the unified base and lower rings!
Nightforce makes a similar unit; it’s how I have the NXS mounted on my heavy 7WSM. But it’s not nearly as aesthetically pleasing as the NEAR unit.
The CENTER will hold.

The alpha mount is just a beautiful mount. Holds Zero and fits the action(in my case Mark V) perfectly. Scope mounted low and with proper spacing.
