I just picked up a Marlin 1895 SBL. Before I start chucking factory parts, I thought I'd come here and ask questions. What are ya'll doing for scope mounting? I want to stay with a conventional, not scout, scope. I have a Leupold 1.75-6X NIB waiting to be mounted. I came to me that an AR-15 one piece picatinny mount might work. The one I have will need a bit of filing to clear the front edge of the factory peep sight, probably 1/8 inch or less. Could do. What about 2 piece QD rings? What height are needed to clear the top of the peep?

Thanks ...

I can't answer your questions but will say that I just ordered the long mount with the ghost ring and taller front sight and a Burris Scout scope. My thought is that I want the scope just in front of the peep as low as possible for a better cheek weld. I'm thinking the 9 - 10" eye relief of the Burris should work out about right. I reckon I'll find out when everything gets here.

Also, if you change the mount base, is the new one going to work with your peep?

Did you hear they arrested the devil? Yeah, they got him on possession.

Cheek weld is a thing. I set the gun up with that one piece AR mount. I did have to file a little on the back so it would clear the front edge of the peep. Cheek does contact but falls way short of "weld". I haven't measured yet but by eyeball I'd say there's .15 to .20 gap between the top of the peep and the bottom of the scope tube. The Loopy mount is stated to be 1.4 inches from base to mid-tube. That seems to verify. I think I will be getting a different mount setup but .. no pressure, no rush.

Your question about changing mount base is a good one. I don't know yet. I'm not sure if the peep is part of the base or not .. I have to take a closer look. I was rushing to get some bullets downrange to check accuracy. In that department I am pretty pleased. It hasn't proven as accurate as my old stainless guide gun but still, all of the loads went well under 2 inches for 3 shots at 100 yards and a couple were at or just under 1 inch. .. and, that said, it's only had 50 rounds down the barrel. It may improve with a a little more shooting. Overall I am very happy with it.

I might reconsider my thoughts about scout scopes .. time will tell on that one.

I just removed the peep and attached a Leupold 2-7x scope. My eyes are not good for open or peeps anymore anyway. I did also add a leather butt pad to help get my eye aligned with the scope.
