Hello, I would like to hear any opinions on the Leupold Ultralight riflescopes. I am thinking about buying one to mount on a Ruger Compact rifle. The weight is around 8 oz., and it would seem to suit the little rifle very well. I will be using this rifle for backpack hunting, mostly. Thank you, Cliff Link: http://www.leupold.com/hunting-and-...t-riflescopes/vx-ii-2-7x28mm-ultralight/

For just 2 more oz, you could have the FXII 6X36, a real mountain rifle, backpacking, whiz bang dependable scope. Me no likey 28mm objectives.

Might add that I owned one of those 2-7X28 Leupolds before they renamed it to the Ultralight series. Very small eyebox and sight picture, it was not fit even for a 22LR rimfire rifle.

Mtn Hunter has it right! Buy the 6X36 Leupy and never look back! I love the 2 I have, and, will have more soon! My absolute favorite Leupy is the 2.5-8, but, after years of killing antelope, deer, elk, bears, etc. out to over 600 yards, I realized I was just wasting money on the 2.5-8 when the 6X36 (or, 6X42) will do just as well.

I gotta try one of those FXIIs with the 'dots.' Sounds like a lot of scope for the $$.

Huntr,
You are going to sell some 6X42s to get them? They must be nice!
I am thinking about getting one for my Kimber 308 that has one of those !@#$ Leupy 3-9X compacts, I HATE that scope...

The LRD, long range duplex, with dots that get you to 500 yards.

How does the six power work in the timber we are talking about 60 to 100 yard shots?
If there is any proof of a man in a hunt it is not whether he killed a deer or elk but how he hunted it.

I have the VX-II Ultralight in a 3-9x33 (the new version with Mulit-Coat 4 and click adjustments)mounted on my MTN Guide .308 and like it alot. I wish it had the 36mm objective for a little bigger sight picture though. It was a toss up between it and the FX-II 6x36mm but I liked the fact that I had a little more zoom with the 3-9,plus I got it at 15% off so I couldnt beat that.

Guys,
Thanks very much for your ideas. I'm certainly open to other scopes. The Leupold ultralight was just an idea because I thought it would go nicely with such a compact rifle. I've never actually seen one yet, and my experience with scopes in general is very limited. I've been using an ancient El Paso Weaver fixed 3x on my Savage 99 in .250-3000, so I have yet to step into the 21st century to see what modern scopes can do for you. I must say there is a bewildering array of models. Thanks again your the help.

MtnHtr agreed sorta.......grin tis all about compromise, I have two 2x7's one mounted on my sheep rifle and one in reserve for putting a sheep rifle together for my kid. I go for the lowest weight stuff I can find for sheep hunting, even if that means compromising some degree of optical quality, but there's a point I won't go past and that point differs for all of us. with that said I've got Leupy 2.5 x 8,, 1.75 x 6, 6x42, 3.5x10 to choose from, for my other hunting rifles I wouldn't even consider using the 2x7 over any of those. but for my sheep rifle yes, I'm looking to save every possible ounce I can within reason (course they're my reasons and may differ from yours) sometimes that means compromising my comfort whether it be optically, sleep gear or food.

I just tried to check this, but Ruger's website is down.
But, IIRC, the Frontier is the model set up for a scout type scope. I'm fairly sure the one I looked at about a year ago could also have a scope mounted on it normally.
The Compact has a little lighter barrel, and is for normal scope mounting only. They're both nice little rifles in my opinion.

MtnHtr I tend to disagree. I put my 2-7x28 on my 22LR and it works acceptably well, not great but acceptable. On my mountain rifle I started with a 3x9 lupie compact and sold it after the first season, then tried a 2-7 and it wasn't much better. I settled on a 2.5-8 but agree a fixed 6 would meet my needs. I worry the thin tube Ultralights might not hold up to my rough handling. I've been known to fall down several times each season.
