I am on a city water system and my fridge has a factory installed ice maker. If you put the ice cubes from the fridge into a glass of water you will see minute white things settle into the water from the ice as it melts. What is the material settling out of the melting ice cubes? Anything to worry about here? Baby zombies?

Sounds like you need to install a good water filter in line on line going to icemaker. They make a cleaner to put in line to clean up mineral deposits and calcium deposits. You need to change the filter a couple times a year. I would bet your icemaker is covered in mineral deposits and calcium deposits. The filers keep water clean and tasting good.

Calcium, lime or entrained air. Chew it up and call it a day.

I have a new fridge with built in filter and ice maker and these are showing up after a month. I think they’re just part of the freeze/thaw cycle of the water.
Happened before when I had a inline filter going to the ice maker, too..

Ice makers and water dispensers are biggest waste of freezer space known to man.
After last fridge went belly up got one without it. Amazing how many extra lbs of meat you can pack in there and still have Ice caddies and trays.

Most likely tiny algae puppis (lat) so common in such systems. Maybe install a pre-container with Plecos in it.

Climate change. Those are heat crystals, brought to you by Solar rays.

This has been fun to read. What are the 3 causes of hardness of water? The cause of hardness of water is due to the presence of bicarbonates, sulphates, and chlorides of calcium and magnesium. We have salts of Calcium and Magnesium in these parts. Yes, as the temperature of water is reduced, those salts become less soluble, and drop out of solution. Then they precipitate as little white flakes. A water softener will trade the Magnesium and Calcium ions in your water for Sodium. The Sodium will not fall out of solution as the water freezes. But I would just as soon consume the Magnesium and Calcium.
People who choose to brew up their own storms bitch loudest about the rain.
