The 18.

THE SUNEX 3351 SET with the 3/8 impact was also a good combination to have.

I have the husquarvana gas and the battery version. Battery model is pretty weak, but OK for light stuff.
Gas version is 100x better for real work.

2) Which ones should I be considering (if any)? I've checked out the Milwaukee and it seems reasonably well built, but I'd like to hear good/bad from those that have used these.

I have an EGO (electric) that my dad gave me; @ $250 I wouldn’t have bought it myself out of, I guess, skepticism? Anyway it’s awesome.

You won’t go wrong with the m 18 Milwaukee tools. I have the quick lock power head with the weed and hedge trimmer attachments. After using it the first time I came to the conclusion I would never buy another gas powered yard tool again. I never drug out an air hose after I bought Milwaukee 1/2” and 3/4 “ impact guns either.

My wife has a Craftsman branded 20v weed whip that works great. I’d personally go with a different brand for battery compatibility but as far as it’s ability on a typical suburban lawn it’s every bit as good as my Stihl two stroke trimmer.

Whatever ya get, make sure it has s straight shaft.

Curved looks more useful (it isn't), but bleeds energy through the curve.

I have a Sthil FS 45 or something like that. Bought it about 15 years ago. Ran absolutely flawless, never did anything to it except run it out of gas in the Fall. Last year it started running rough, I just continue to use it. This Spring it wouldn't start, didn't get around to dropping it off yet. Stopped into Lowes and saw a Kolbalt battery power trimmer for 169.00, I said [bleep] and bought it. I hate to admit it but I really like it, it's light, powerful enough and is easier on my shoulder. Don't know how well it holds up over the long haul, but for now, I like it a lot.

I've had the Milwaukee M18 Polesaw, weedeater, and hedge clipper combo for 4 years. Meets all my needs. All my other battery tools are Milwaukee so it was a no brainer

Or a Shindaiwa. That said, I have an FS 131 with brush blades and trimmer heads.

since that pesky heart attack back in 2012, I don't really do yard work. A stihl electric takes care of incidental weed trimming that I need to do from time to time. Plenty of power and it does a great job.

I've got a Ryobi One+ 18v that is about eight years old. Has done well. Bought it because I have some other 18v Ryobi stuff. Three years ago needed an electric chain saw, so got an EGO. It did fine for what I needed. Then needed an electric mower for our small backyard patch. Got an EGO and it did fine. No longer need it. Decided a more powerful weedeater was needed so got an EGO combination deal with a blower and weed eater. Blower is awesome. Weed eater not so much. Has the self feeding string deal, which is a pain and takes too long to load. Advancing the line is a pain and doesn't work all the time. Now, the batteries seem to lose their charge when sitting. Wouldn't do EGO anymore.

Might get some of the Ryobi 40v stuff.

I have been using one of those WORX trimmers for a long time. It is the 32 Volt model and has out cut any other weed eaters I have owned. It uses the preloaded string spools that are replaceable very quickly and are free( you pay shipping). The trimmer is very light weight andi is adjustable for all kinds of trimming jobs including edging along patios.
We gave our daughter one of them who has almost an acre of yard and she loves it.

They aren't expensive either.

I recently bought an EGO electric- it outperforms every trimmer I have previously owned, gas or electric.

I just got done weedeating under my camper with the new M18. There was over 30 days growth on the grass, it powered right threw it in short order.

There's no way I would buy a gas burner unless I had A LOT of weedeating to do.
