Here are some pics of my buddy’s Winchester Model 1894. It has come down to him from his father and grandfather. Would you kind and knowledgeable souls please enlighten him (and me!) with what you know about this octagonal barreled beauty? When was it made? What did it cost new? What is its approximate value today? No sale of this heirloom is anticipated; just curious. Thanks for your time.
PS: He has fired factory ammo in it without harming it or himself. We’ll take it to the range soon. I have loaded 70 rounds for him consisting of 173 grain Lyman 311041 sized at .309” over a starting load of IMR 4198.

Your M1894 Sporting Rifle is an honest gun that hasn’t been messed with. It has all original finishes and an optional (not Special Order) 26” Octagon barrel. $1,200 - $1,500+. Original rear sight, front sight also looks original, but just can’t say for sure with the pic. I’d just wipe it down and run a patch through the bore.

If I owned it, it would go in my coffin when I died. That is the best looking rifle I have seen in a long time

Some mornings, it just does not feel worth it to chew through the straps!~
