Brother had the 2 grandsons over for a week. The other night, one of the kids flushed the toilet, but the valve didn't close, and the toilet "refilled" all night long. The kids were using the guest bathroom, brother never goes in there, so he didn't notice it. Next morning, there was no water. The pump was down at 660 feet. The running toilet ran the well dry. The pump overheated, you can see here that just above the pump the PVC melted and swelled up twice its size, and melted a hole in the PVC. The wire proved to be in rough shape, in one place there was a 3 inch long place where the insulation was worn off, exposing the copper. He got a new 1 1/2-5 pump and 660 feet of new wires. $7,410.

Yes they laid all the pipe on the ground. Interesting. Did they clean it before they went back down the hole?

The pipes screw together, one connection every 20 feet. They carefully cleaned the threads before they screwed the 2 pieces together. Yes, there was a little dirt and grass on the pipes as they lowered it back into the hole.

Our pump motor failed on July 3rd. Lucky to get a pump man to come and pull it out on the 4th. Also lucky to have found a pump and motor although from two different suppliers. Five hp. Pump sets at 120'. $9090.00. Happy Independence day for the five households on the community system!
Failed pump was installed in 2004 at a cost of $2900. Hope we get nineteen years out the new one.

Damn, what is a toilet fill rate? .75 to 1 gpm?
And that ran a well dry?
I am sure glad I do not live in that country. I can irrigate at 25 gpm for a week at a time and never move the static level.

My brother's well has a poor flow of only .75 gallons/minute. And he has only 160 feet of water standing above the pump. 240 gallons standing above the pump.
My house is 1/2 mile away, on top of the same ridge as my brother, I have an unreal flow of 37 gallons a minute. I was really lucky to get so high a flow on top of the mountain.
A gallon per minute is the norm for mountaintop houses around here.

Years ago my current property shared a waterline with 3 other neighbors
I was closest to the last city connection...about 250 yds away
Had a turd tank too
Annexed a 200' x 125' section into the city
Had the sewer line extended from the last connection mentioned above also
Told 'em while your back hoe is here.......
prob should add a fire hydrant inside the new city annexation..they did
Squeaky wheel gets the grease eh ?
Water/sewer/garbage is about $37/month with a 10K gallon max water allowance monthly

I hope they placed a float switch or thermal sensor on the new pump.

I had the same thing happen 2 years ago. My pump sits at 425' and only has a drawdown of 40'. Everything is fine until someone leaves a water hose on or a toilet leaks. I've added a pump current protector to help. If it senses low current, it assumes the pump ran dry and starts a trip timer.
I could ball kick the guy that built the house and skimped on drilling the well. Going another 50- 75 feet would have been cheap money at that point. I could also kick him for where he drilled it, the back yard. I have a perfectly accessible side yard off the driveway that would have worked just as well.

My Son in Law makes a good living fixing problems just like this. Except he is usually working with 16 inch to 30 inch holes for Ag or municipalities. In non drought times when business gets a little slow, he will do a few domestic wells to keep his crews busy. But yes, he often is contracted to come in and punch a hole deeper.
