Gents,

If you wanted to get a 223 Rem to a max of 500 (maybe a bit past but the longest i have access too is 500....lets say 600 max) yards, for fun and for the odd plink at a coyote or the like, what bullet/load would you choose?

Rifle in question is a Tikka T3x Lite Stainless, 22.3" with 1-8 twist

Thanks!

75 ELD-X, 77 SMK, 77 TMK, or 80gn SMK over H322, H335, or XBR 8208.

Ive got a Tikka superlight with the 8 twist. Its normal load is a 55 gr NBT over a max charge of cfe223....does just fine at 500 if you can dope the wind.

75ELD and LVR for me, although mine's a CTR with the benefit of a longer mag. 500 is a cakewalk for that load.

I have a Ruger Predator that I shoot at 500 sometimes... 62gr soft points is what I hunt with under about 27gr of CFE223

I use the 77 TMK's but LVR as well. Same rifle. Makes 500 look easy mostly.

Thanks guys! Appreciate the experience/load combos. Sounds like there are a lot of ways to skin this particular cat, and that's a good thing!

Although I hear that comment on the wind. I best get to practicing. Happy to hear the 1-8 will handle some 80 grain offerings as well. Good to know.

Is Hornady's 73gr Match bullet any good as well?

The 73gr Hornady is not a good pill to use on game. Check out penetration tests done by people with that bullet. One reason I only punch paper or ground squirrels with them. I like and use sierra 77's. Both the bthp match and TMK. Excellent pills for reaching way out there with the .223 rem. The powders I use are RL15 and AR Comp. YMMV.

Good to know, thanks!

Higginez, what kind of rifle is that? It looks great in the McMillan stock there? And good shooting!

What are your favorite 223 AI loads?

Might consider having this one punched out someday, but would have to go with a new mag setup for the Tikka to take advantage of the length

My Tikka SL will shoot 50 Vmax, 55 Vmax, 65 SGKs and 55 Hornady SPs sub MOA with just about any load.

75s are a lot easier past 300 for me, but I had a little harder time getting them to shoot under 1”. IMR 4895 (max load) .010” off the lands is shooting great, biggest group (5) was .7. Hitting coyote sized steel at 500 is very easy.

Igloo, keep us posted on how your rifle does. I'm interested, as I have a Tikka T3x lite chambered in 22-250 with a 1 in 8" twist. The 223 remington is a cool little cartridge, though, that always seems to do quite well. I have some AR's that shoot damn well from 400 to 600 yards. That rifle like beretz's (Tikka CTR) would be a damn cool one to have. Yours is a lot lighter, so your form has to be pretty good to shoot well at 500 yards. It's manageable though, as my Lite 22-250 does a pretty good job. It's set up a little heavier though, as it wears a B&C stock and heavy Nightforce scope. I look forward to hearing about how your rifle shoots and what bullet you decide on. Test different ones if you are uncertain.

best response I can think of right here... my only additions would be using H 380 or AR Comp, IMR 4895 & / or 4064.

and I'd leave out H335/
I hate that powder.....

Thank you! Will do! And that 22-250 must open up a lot of nice options for you to drive some good bullets very ast! Think you need one of those and a setup like Beretz has too wink

Having to keep solid form will be great for training. At least the Ascent is almost 18 oz...feels good on there actually.

Very much stuck in the big city apt for the time being...but its coming together.

Thanks Seafire! What's wrong with 335? Never used it enough to form an opinion one way or another. Most of my 223 shooting was with Ramshot TAC but it also mostly ironsighted AR.
