Fellers, have a 1960 Ferg. Was all over this stuff 40-50 years ago. Prob is it was 40-50 years ago. What I do know it seems to have no spark. The coil is not that old. Have never touched the roter, points and condenser. Ideas?

Most likely problem is dirty or burned points. Clean or replace them, and set the gap at around .020" with a feeler gauge with the rubbing block resting on one of the high spots on the distributor cam. DO NOT replace the condenser- - - -all the "new" ones are made in some 3rd. world slave labor sweatshop, and they have a >50% failure rate new out of the box.

Pull cap and double check rotor is turning.
Check cap to ensure it isn’t cracked.
Eliminate possible issues as you go.

Do the old traditional tune up...points, plugs, and condenser.

If you don't mind spending a little $$ convert it to electronic ignition for under $200.

I'm an owner of a 1951 Ford 8N, 12V conversion.

Key on, check for power at your coil. If hot, work downstream from there. Your mutimeter makes quick work of this.

Ground spark plug, hit starter button. Good fire (white/blue spark)? If yes, then make sure your firing sequence is correct (1,3,4,2). If no spark, points probably have slipped. If weak, yellow spark then likely a weak battery or a ground problem.

I assume the Ferguson runs Autolite 437s. Check each.

On the EI suggestion above... in the fifteen or more years I've run my 8N weekly, easily the best investment was EI. $75 then, very quick install, and I've had not one problem with it since. On older distributors, points frequently slip and cause misery when it's 90 degrees out and you're two miles from the barn.

YTMag is a wealth of help if you run into further problems.

Any links for the EI? I like the idea.

I used the Ignitor, which then was about half of what it is now:

If the ad says "Pertronix" anywhere in the copy- - - - -RUN, do not walk away! They have a nasty habit of melting down if the ignition switch is left on without the engine running, even for a minute or two. Just about any point type distributor can be converted to run inexpensive, reliable GM High Energy Ignition parts that are available at any corner auto parts store. PM me for details.
