A good friend and hunting buddy went hunting with his son today and harvested this buck. He shot it in the neck with a 7 STW and 150 gr bullet. Said it went straight to the ground. Trouble is, when they loaded it into the truck, one side of the rack came off. Although there is not a lot of height in the rack, it sure is nice and wide and symmetrical. Any of you guys want to give your best estimate as to width of the rack?

Got any more pics with the ears facing us instead of to the rear? With the ears to the rear like they are it kind of pimps the pic a bit and makes it look bigger than it most likely is.
At a glance the deer looks young and immature so I'd be hard pressed to give it much more than 19 or 20".
Thats just a guess off of a very tough pic to guess.
We need more pics.
Obviously the opportunity was there to tape it so I am kind of curious as to why you're asking?
Thx

No tape in the truck. Deer was shot about 35 miles from home. Yes, it is a young deer.
No there are no more photos. My buddy is a moose killer, not a photographer. This is his son's first deer with the 7 STW. Both were suitably impressed.
I guessed 22 - 23" but I'm not much at guessing from a picture. The guy in the picture is a muscular sort of man that likely goes about 190 pounds, good shoulders, if that helps.

Guess he could always measure it when he gets home?
It sure could go over 20, with the ears back and those shorty tines it makes it a bit challenging to tell.
Most importantly I am glad the lad got one no matter what it measures.

I am not a good judge of racks not having shot any that big, although I know I would have shot that one . . . but just looking at the lads shoulders I am thinking 24+

I would think it's between 21" and 23", a little hard to tell though.

Here is another picture from my bud. He is most assuredly NOT a photographer. His camera was stuck on B&W and he didn't even know it. The ear on this one is a little more to the side, I think. BTW - thanks for the guesses so far. And I would have wacked him too. Small body on the lad. I told my buddy's son that in a couple years, he would have had some serious bragging rights.

Check out the width between the brow tines. Pretty wide for a young deer don't ya think?

Nice buck, plenty of horn soup for all. I would guess 21ish. Well DONE!
Also, I believe that the horn could be "reset" back on the skull by a taxidermist worth his salt. It wouldn't suffice for official scoring but it might give the most honest/accurate idea of the buck natural/true spread.

You could scale it off the picture if you measure from the bottom of the taillight to the top of the box on the fender. That would give you a scale, that could be laid across the antlers. The antlers are about the same distance from the photographer as the tail light is.
