A "guy" needs a pistol for home defense, ccw, and hunting sidearm..... No BIG BEARS involved.....A reliable mid-size pistol with decent capacity in 9mm should be all that's needed?

Just some overheard blabbing i over heard at the local gun shop this morning when I was looking for a shell holder for my press. Can't really argue.... I will for fun but seems like good advice as long as you match the ammo to the situation?

There are a lot of good options out there. Anything from 9mm, .357 Sig, .40 S&W, 10mm, .45 ACP, .357 Magnum, .41 and .44 Magnum, .44 Special, and .45 Colt are all great given the right bullet and a reliable shooting platform.

I'm not knocking the 9 mm that when you added hunting to the equation 9 mm are expressly prohibited along with 38 Special at least here in Missouri unless they've changed something since I read through it and I suspect it may be the same with some other states. Now I'm referring to deer hunting in particular here Missouri can I figure it's the same some other places.

If deer or large are on your hunting list I would start with .357 and up

Well here you can’t have a semi auto any thing that holds more than 6 rounds while deer hunting and has to have 500 ft lbs energy at 50 yards.

I guess that would technically work, but where's the fun in that?

I hardly consider 9 to be a hunting round. Guess it depends on what you're hunting. As a hunting sidearm, that could mean personal defense or animal defense, likely both. I'd want something more than a 9 in the woods. At a min. 40sw, more likely 357 or 10mm.

ETA. I know guys that carry their beloved CCW9mm's in the woods while big game hunting. My opinion is their CCW 9's are more personal comfort, like a child's blanket, than something thought out in practical terms - especially in the western states where predatory animals are bigger and ranges longer.

Me too Sam.

I have purchased a handful of 9s and 45s over the past 5 years. The next time you are in Sportsmen take a look at a Sar USA SAR9 9mm. They have them on sale for $350.00 and it is one hell of a β€œutility-9” for the money. The Turks built it hell for-stout and a guy needs to run NATO in for the first 200 rounds to loosen it up. After that it will run anything.

Right now, with the rebate, one could get a threaded, RMR ready Beretta Apex A1 for under $400.

I don't think the 9mm is expressly prohibited in Missouri. Here is what I found regarding handguns:

"Centerfire pistols or revolvers using expanding-type bullets, such as lead or copper are allowed."

Semi-auto rifles, shotguns, or handguns can only be a 10+1 capacity. Do you have a link showing otherwise?

Never said hunting in the OP…. I said hunting SIDEARM….No Big Bears….. realistically black bears up to 300 lbs and mountain lions, both extremely rare to begin with as far as dangerous encounters go.

That is a ridiculous law. Foot pounds of energy isn't the killing mechanism penetration is

Then you take it up with them, but will add that has been in the big game guide since 1980. But I was wrong it’s 400 ft lbs

Colorado has a dumb a$$ law like that. I get the energy part...there has to be some means of measurement. But the 50 yard part? Why not add 50ftlbs. and measure it at the muzzle? Who is going to try and shoot through a chronograph at 50 yards with a pistol? (Labradar didn't exist when these laws were written.)

As to the OP's question...I'm just not a one gun guy. It's like asking what single golf club could I use for everything, or what one wrench is best for the garage.

Bud if you go to the ballistics chart you will find that 38 special, 9mm, 45acp will not make the energy cut. In some instance even the 357 mag just barely makes it by factory loading standards. With this rule 357 mag is as low as you can go to be legal. I hunted with 41 mag and took deer to 100 yards.
