Is that plate in the butt stock a factory option?

They don't show the rear, so can't be sure it's a factory plate, but they were an option and I would assume that it is. Did you notice the plugged scope mount holes? Looks like they used brass or a steel alloy that didn't take the blue they used correctly, some cast steel can end up that color.
CORRECTION, see next post, I read plate instead of plaque... early morning, too early.

Gene, I think he mean the plaque on the side of the stock. i had the same question. I can't blow it up big enough to see what it looks like?

Yes, read it a plate..... I never questioned the plaque, the engraving style of the initials matches some others I've seen. The 1902 & later catalogs list as an option - "Silver Plate with Name and Scroll ....$5.00", not in the 1900 catalog. Name & scroll without it being on a separate plate was $2.00 and that was also in the 1900 catalog. I was told of one gun with initials that also had a matching watch fob, I've seen watch fobs with similarly engraved initials. The two with initials here are gold washed with about 8 carat gold, which is only about 1/3 gold.

I was told of one gun with initials that also had a matching watch fob I didn't know that. It makes sense that a similarly marked fob would go with a rifle plaque. A matched set with documentation linking the rifle, the owner, etc. would be pretty cool.

Does the stock on this gun look shortened to anyone else?

I think it is just that it has that fat Berch-belly stock.

Evidently it was not re-blued when the other metal work was done on the D&T's. Appears to be a deluxe Savage 1899-250 with some originality issues and potentially more. Seems like a factory letter would help. There are a lot more deluxe model 1899H's floating around than there are deluxe 1899-250's so desirable from that standpoint. Though it's been drilled and filled probably better off not re-blued IMO. Good rifle for the right collector.

Just think, I bought a $12,000 John Deere a few weeks ago. What was I thinking?

For same price as top one.. this 250-3000. Somebody mucked with buttplate, but I think I'd choose this.
“ The Savage 99 Pocket Reference”. All models and variations of 1895’s, 1899’s and 99’s covered. Also dates, checkering, engraving.. Find at www.savagelevers.com

Called the Mrs over to the computer with the Savage picture showing. Asked her what she thought about it. She asked if I bid on it and I kinda smiled. She said you won it didn't you. Then I showed the price and her mouth dropped open. Nice lookin gun ifin a person likes that style of finish. I'm more impressed with the wood than the metal. Not a big fan of over engraving, a little on the receiver and nice checkering is more in line with my eye candy. Nice rifle for someone with 15 G's not knowing what to do with that amount of $$ and not wanting a 99 to shoot.
