Fairly certain i am a buyer for a new 4Runner base model with 4wd. My current Honda pilot has a sloppy gear transition and the feel the torque converter is problematic.

Seems as the new redesigned 4Runner is a 4 cylinder bastard turbo?

Am likely to order a new one, white, Monday.

Anyone have anything blatantly against a base model 4wd 4Runner?

The 2023 model still comes with the naturally aspirated 4.0 6-cylinder engine.

I’ve worked for toyota for 23 years now and have owned about every vehicle they’ve made in that time. My current position offers me two vehicles of my choosing. My wife has a 23 4Runner TRD pro with everything available added to it. It has the 4.0 engine. My only complaint is it seems really underpowered. Merging into traffic at speed or trying to pass a car on a two lane is always less than enjoyable. With that being said I love having it for her. It’s uber safe and reliable.

Meadows….What’s your second vehicle?…you said you get 2 of your choosing so what’s the 2nd? Inquiring minds. 😀

Thanks

While the 4 runner of today is quite dissimilar to the 4 runner of 92.

I would still be driving that 92, instead of selling it 18 years ago, if only it had been equipped with the 4 cyl. A five speed manual gear box would have also been desirable, though I could have lived with the auto and a 4 cyl.

I should have also never turned loose of that 82 Toyo 4x4 pickup. Practically gave it away in '05. Try to buy one today.

I had a 2017 4.0L V6 4Runner TRD Off-road. I loved that vehicle but missed having the bed for stuff. It was sluggish you had to press the skinny pedal hard. I now have a 2019 Tundra. Great truck but they tune them down from the factory. I purchased a Banks Throttle Monster. It allows you to adjust the throttle sensitivity. It makes a huge difference on the Tundra. I would look into one of those for the 4Runner if I still had one. I wish I still had my 2017 I miss it.

You’re going to make me buy that from Banks for my 2020 Tundra.

As to 4Runners, have had them for rentals several times, lack of power was my only major gripe, and size.

Jack I’m kind of thinking the same. The new tech will ruin the ridiculous proven reliability.

My thoughts are to strike now.

Dumbassed feds without an iota of engineering knowledge setting mileage & emissions standards without having a clue if they are obtainable & then putting an unrealistic deadline on them.

The continual degradation of quality & affordability is increasingly noticeable. Not to mention dependability.

The 4 Runners are great and will last a long time and lots of miles. But if you want or need power, they are worthless. I'd buy one in a heartbeat if my wife wanted one but not for me.

I had a ‘92 Toyota extended cab (manual my vehicle)and a ‘94 4-runner (automatic wife’s vehicle) back in the mid 90’s. Both with the 3.0. Both went over 200k miles and we sold them both for about 20% less than when we bought them new.

Wife currently has a 2020 4-runner TRD Off Road that has modified suspension (Old EMU) with the 4.0. It is a much better vehicle in my opinion than the 90’s version.

I bought a new 2016 Forerunner. I don't tow anything. It's had ample power for all uses so far.

Toyota is making very few "Base Models" at this time.

Took 9 months for us to help a friend get a semi "Base Model" RAV-4... AND she had zero choice in color or add ons.

You might get lucky... but I would prepare yourself for having to drop $50k plus.

Sorry, just the way it is...

I am at 20 months (and still waiting) on a "Base Model" Tundra 4WD.

Those controllers do not add any power at all. They just male the car feel a little snappier down low because they send more voltage out from the pedal with less foot pressure. They arent worth it imo

Traded my '18 SR5 4wd w/65k mi. in for a '22 SR5 4wd in January of '22........the dealer gave me what i paid originally for the '18.

I wasnt real exited excited about what i was reading about the changes Toyota had planned for the 4runner in '24.

My wife's 4runner has the 4.0 6 cylinder in it and has been fine. It isn't a racing engine, but the rest of the vehicle isn't exactly suitable for one.

The T24A-FTS that will be in the 2024s isn't a new powertrain. It has been in a Lexus or two since 2021 and is in the current Highlanders..,any maybe some other models. So most of the initial bugs have likely been worked out. But even Toyota has been clear that these new turbo 4s won't have the longevity of earlier engines. They are making the changes to meet emissions, because they have to.
