My Dad just ordered a CZ 457 .22 and inevitably, he is going to any day ask me, “what scope should I put on it?” So, I am starting to look at options. He will want something that “fits” the rifle (nothing huge) with decent magnification for shooting paper and squirrels out to 50 yards, good quality, simple, and a decent price. Any suggestions?

Burris Droptine 22. It has a few hash marks below the center, but not obtrusive at all. Good eye relief and good eye box. Surprisingly good glass for the price. https://cameralandny.com/shop/burri...0135-de52-00163e90e196?variation=1694271

I haven't owned a CZ 457, but had a 452 FS with open sights and found that the rear sight needed to be removed to prevent it from being in the way of scopes with objective bells larger than 32 or 33mm in order to get proper eye relief. Just something to consider.

Given the reputation of the CZs for accuracy, I'd want something that would make realizing that potential easier. For me it would require something to deal with parallax---an AO at the least but ideally something with side focus. If he can find one of the older Weaver Grand Slam 3-12x50s with side focus I think he'd be pleased, but really I have no idea whatsoever what his thoughts are. Having never owned a CZ rimfire rifle I know nothing about what 260Remguy says. A 50mm objective may be out of the question. Those little Leupold 3-9x Compacts with AO are pretty sweet little scopes but they are probably as rare as the old Grand Slams with side focus, plus the AO itself is just not as nice as SF. Once you've used Side Focus it's hard to get excited about anything you have to reach out to the objective in order to adjust.

Some people are not concerned with parallax on a rimfire rifle. Some are.

I put a 4-12 VX II with adjustable AO on my CZ452. It fits perfectly and performs equally well.

For those of us who are interested in the hint, can you translate the reference "Bob's rail rules." to something we can search for?

For your needs, targets and critters at 50 yards, I agree with this. I own a few. The Sightron 3-9X Rimfire is also an option. I own a couple them and am pleased. Another favorite is the now discontinued 2-7X Weaver Rimfire scope. It's hard for me to imagine you needing an AO.

I’ve been super impressed with the 3-9 Athlon Neos I bought for my boys 10-22, it or the 4-12 would be tough to beat, though the 6x MQ is a good choice if you can stomach the size/weight.

The Athlon 3-12 is a relatively short scope for the amount of variable range you get. I have one on a .22 and it looks right at home on it.

Set up my 452 American with a Super Chicken and Bob's Rail after a conversation with Stick. Send it to CZ's gunsmith and had him chop the barrel to 18 .5" and put a knurled cap on it, plus a trigger job. It is the nuts.
