A Ruger 10/22 for just stomping around the woods or trail walking and small targets of opportunity. This

Depends on several factors, for me. Generally have a S&W 37 with me, but when calling coyotes, I go to a S&W 317. Walking around for fun, a Marlin 57M goes with me a bit - CZ 204 much of the time. During season, either my Savage 99 .243, or Marlin 336 .30-30, or Ruger #1 30-06.
Then, sometimes I just take a different "gal" to the dance - just for fun!

I have always liked my 11894 Marlin .25-20 for that role. If I were concerned about fending off dangerous stuff I would also carry one of my N frames or my Glock 20. I like that choice Chuck. My .25-20 wears a Weaver 1-3x so with proper placement, I think it would handle anything from bushtails to piggage. Or, the Marlin .30 Carbine might not be a bad choice NICE!! My tongue got hard. Either one would be hard to beat as a walk-around.

I carry my Dad's 1927 manufactured '94 in 30-30 (marked .30 wcf ? - not 30-30, anyway.) I share my woods with real critters....

If I had one of those I'd have to make up my mind which cylinder to put in the .25 cal revolver I have to go along as sidekick that day.

For my woods? Ruger 77/357, w/ Federal 158 gr. JFP. GR There it is! I substitute a 1894 sometimes.

Not sure what woods you wander in, but Out West along with that .22 you might want a pistol in a bigger caliber along with you. Was a time, when a neighbor had a bad holstein bull that was an escape artist, I regularly carried a .45 while walking our local northern Illinois ridge trail. That bull met his end when he jumped out of a ditch in front of a minivan. (ditch cape holstein?)

If you are not actively engaging EVERY enemy you encounter... you are allowing another to fight for you... and that is cowardice... plain and simple.

I don't have one, but a Marlin Camp 9mm might be the cat's ass too. Of course you could substitute a Ruger PC or similar "modern" version.

Sold it to an older friend that loved levers, I loaded a bunch of ammo for him. Sweet shooter with the 60 grain Speers. Very pleasant to shoot.

Without any specific requirement stated, I would go with a savage 24 of one configuration or another.
