I've seen one price around $360 or so for this scope. It's supposed to have the same Mc4 coating as VX III's and turrets. Seems like a pretty good value. Are there any reasons a person should avoid it? Good luck, Troy

Does that scope have click adjustments? I don't think it does and the way I use target knobs is to just count the clicks. I don't even look at the scope but keep my eyes on the target. It's the same with target shooting.

Also the Leu. tactical knobs on the 4.5 X 15 Tac. that I have are way too big. They stick way out and look silly. Some other brands of scopes have smaller finger knobs with clicks like Sightron. That's what you want.

The VariX-III use Mc4 coatings inside and out, while the VX-II uses MgF2 inside and Mc4 on the external lens. Relates to 92% total light transmission versus 86% for the VX-II.

Am partial to the 3-9x with an elevation turret. Any leupold scope with turrets, has "clicks",at least I'm unaware of one that doesn't.

Pretty easy to snag a used 3-9x,send it to Leupie, ask for an elevation adjustment and be riding tall in the saddle for $200-ish or so,after all the dust settles.

Have quite a pile of them myself and am tickled.................

'Stick, when hunting deer with your 3-9's do you ever feel yourself wanting of more magnification or clarity on a potential shot in the 500-700 yard range? The reason I ask is because of some of the public ground I hunt on the prairie and even in the Hills units. For example, one walk-in area I hunt for antelope has a shallow bowl in the farthest corner that is pushing 600 yards across. Fencing creates the corner on the far end with a slight rise creating the bowl opposite the fence. The goats like this area because most folks will not trek that far back to get them. Plus, this bowl prevents anything from creeping closer than the aforementioned 600ish yards without being seen. The land on the other side of the fence is not open to the public so your approach is limited. With my current set up 4-12 Nikon and a zero that puts PBR around 350 or so I'm comfortable out to about 450. Much beyond that and more Tennessee elevation is required than I care to use. Thus, of course, my desire for at least an elevation knob. I would like to eventually change the scope on the big thirty and also install appropriate glass on the .264 WSM to be able to take advantage of specialized situations like this. If everything is favorable at the time, I don't feel a shot like that is unreasonable provided my equipment and I are up to the task. As I wrote in an e-mail to a new friend who resides in the north western area of South Dakota, I am torn between the 6X42, 3-9 Tact., 3-10X40, and the 4.5-14X40. Good luck, Troy

At the distance you mention,it don't take the Hubble to discern the target and paste the reticle upon it.

I shoot to that distance all the time(700yds +) in practice and often with a "lowly" 6x42. Fact is one of my favoritest of my newest rifles,is my SUCKS 300WSM and it wears a 6x42 Tactical with duplex. I'm a shoulder breaker and it don't take that much magnification to discern where that particular region lies on a critter of the size you mention.

No secret that the 3.5-10x 40mm is my favorite variable and that I personally have no love for the 4.5-14x in any of it's flavorings. I personally find the 3.5-10x a breeze to use and forgiving in all areas,it really is a great glass IMHO.

I even have a 6x42 on my KS 25-06AI and it has the performance coupled with accuracy,to lend itself a fairly convincing long range hammer. There are no "sacrifices" in that package,as far as punching tags is concerned.

Now my eyes, tastes and manner of doin' business are likely all different from yours and you gotta weigh the glass that horns you up the most. But I'll let you in on a little secret,if you were fielding a sound rifle wearing any of the glass mentioned and muffed a poke, you sure as hell couldn't fault the glass for the shortcoming.

I'm not keen on the last light, high winds, running Game,Hail [bleep] Mary poke,so I've never had an issue with resolution in any instance with any of the scopes you mention as I've got all of them except I let my 4.5-14x's go away.

Granted promising conditions, that warrant the long range green light, any of the crop has the required mustard to get the job done and you just gotta pick the creature comforts within the examples cited, that yank your crank the mostest. All of them tracked superbly for me and that is an important key.

If you can paste your crosshairs where you wish, that is where the projectile will go,barring adverse atmospheric conditions and you dialed the correct dope. Reading the wind is Black Magic and worthy of it's own Thread(book!).

I likely did nothing more than confuse you,but the point I were trying to make,is to go with the one that calls you the most and get to practicing with it. Then you gotta heed the limits of your rifle and your skills with it. As an aside, all of those optics will get you to 1K easily,as far as internal elevation adjustment.

Not a poor pick in the lot,IMHO...................

I hear ya cluckin' big chicken <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> . Not confused at all, the decision is getting easier actually. Considering your post and info from others I am leaning toward the 3.5-10X40. That 6X42 however may find a home in time on my wife's, "cough, wheeze", '06. That rifle is begging to become a .280 improved, but I digress. I have a little 6X36 on my stubby 6mm that I just love. The last speed goat I shot fell to that rifle and a 75 gr. X. Good luck, Troy
