As I’ve gotten older I find myself much more attracted to older blued guns with nice wood instead of stainless and synthetic. I bought an older Remington BDL heavy barrel in 22-250. It’s in really good condition and drives tacks. I’m just trying to figure out it’s age. The serial number doesn’t have a letter prefix so maybe late 60’s? The barrel code is UKS. Serial number is 6239350.

In this case the second and third letters, K and S, are the date code. “K” would be the month of May and “S” was used for ‘69 and ‘98. A serial number of 6239350 would be appropriate for 1969. Lacy’s book lists a Varmint Special SN 6239196, 22/250 assembly date of April, ‘69. Then next serial number he lists is a 270, SN 6247593, assembled May,69.

Hope that helps.

I helped a couple of guys get sighted in with a vintage 700 BDL Varmint Special in 222. That rifle was a sweetheart.

If you guys were like me, I thought to be a 'real man', to shoot deer, you needed a 300 Win Mag. of course that was around 1980....

Last several deer I've taken down I was a used a bolt action 6.5 Grendal...

This season, I'm going out with a 6 x 45.

amazing the variation in one's thought in their younger years, vs what they learn works just fine in older age.

by the way.. Nice look rifle Tom!

There’s a date code on the barrel that reveals the date and month of manufacture. There was a short time however when Remington didn’t stamp that information in the barrel. Yours should have that date info though.

I prefer classic.

Like the OP I really prefer wood and walnut... and I love pre-69 remington 700's (flat sided safeties, aluminum butt plate - except magnums)... I have been purchasing them up for some time.... I just got one here in the forum from Timspawn that the bolt face literally had no blue wearing at all... Not sure if the thing has been even shot 20 times in its life... It was born March of 1965...

That’s the same checkering that I have.
