I found this piece of brass on our mule deer ranch last December. It is marked WRAC (Winchester Repeating Arms) 30 G, 1906. I say it is a predecessor of the 30-06, circa 1900-1903 or so. A buddy of mine says it's nothing more than a 30-40 Krag military cartridge. Anyone know the facts?

The "1906" is a giveaway , thats a .30-06 case.

Were it that age, and just .30 Govt, it could be the 1903 precursor to the .30-06 aka .30-03

Yup! 30-40 is either .30 US ARMY or .30 ARMY.

Best of my knowledge the Govt moniker was never associated with the Krag ctg.

If it has a rim, it's a 30-40.

Some early civilian Krag brass in my 'collection'...is headstamped .30 Army. A couple of my early civilian rifles in .30-06 are barrel stamped ".30 Govt 06", but I have no brass with that headstamp, however. I think your brass is fairly rare, but I'm no real collector.

Well this is a fine pickle we're in, should'a listened to Joe McCarthy and George Orwell I guess.

1906 is the clincher. Only one cartridge ever had that headstamp

If it has a rim sticking out from the base, it's a 30-40.

.30-06

Started service in 1906... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.30-06_Springfield

Came from the .30-03 Springfield

With the rifle designed by the Mauser boys... "This rifle, which formed the basis for much of the design of our own American Springfield Rifle, (on which a royalty of $200,000 was paid to Mauser by our Army).

Winchester’s caliber designation for the .30-06 on the M1895, M54 and M70 was .30 GOV’T ‘06, changed to .30-06 SPRG. in 1950 and 30-06 SPLFD. in 1952

The brass didn't come from that rifle. There must have been a heck of a shoot out there.
