Rifle, trap, baseball & bowling teams.
Savage also had a band and orchestra that played on the renovated top floor where employees enjoyed a restaurant and dance floor.

No, television, no cell phones, no space book, no other wasteful uses of time just everyday life. Folks actually learned to do stuff that was pleasant and useful.

They also had a LOT of employees at the end of World War I.

By the end of 1920, the vast majority had been laid off. Recessions suck.

The Savage Band & Orchestra were quite popular.
As well as playing often at the Savage factory they also played for many other events around Utica 1918-1920.

Per Wiktionary…’Smoker’, an informal social gathering for men only, at which smoking tobacco is allowed.

When I was growing up in Upstate New York "Smokers" were social gatherings with food and drink and that usually offered games of chance.

Usually as a fundraiser for a non profit like a Fire Company or a family that was going through hard times.

We had one every year to raise money for our High School baseball team. That was a long time ago...

I don't remember the boxing part, but back in the day, I bet there was betting on the boxing as well. Some was probably paid to the winners, and some went to the house for whatever the event was held for.

In fact, now that I think about it, I remember them being referred to as "mixed smokers", so I guess that meant the ladies were invited as well. I'm taking about the 70's here, not the 20's.

Never put that together until now...
