Hello, I know that the 22 Hi power uses .227-.228 bullet diameter. Can anyone tell me the correct bore diameter? A friend would like to re-barrel one and is looking for the information and possibly a barrel maker to contact. Any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks

If I was gunna rebarrel one I'd make it a 219 Zipper so I could use standard .224 bullets, but I'm odd that way.

Thanks Rifling is typically cut 0.004" deep, so subtract 0.008" from the diameter of the bullet to get the correct bore diameter. Back in the day, some cartridges had names associated with their bore diameter, like the 236 Lee Navy and 256 Newton, while they used bullets that were 0.008" larger in diameter, 0.244" and 0.264" respectively.

There was at least one barrel maker who did .228" barrels, Pac-Nor, but I don't know if they resumed that size after recovering from the fire that wrecked the shop. I would do a fresh .22HP but only because I have an ungodly amount of .227-.228 bullets to use in it, otherwise I would lean toward the Zipper.
Always wanted to build a HP on a strong single shot action like a High Wall or CPA 44 1/2 to wring it out to its true potential. It was a favorite case among wildcatters in the 30's as the basis for high velocity .22's. Jerry Gebby had a copyright on the .22 Varminter (what we now call .22-250) and a lot of guys were po'ed about that so they used the Savage case in order to achieve the crazy velocities without having to pay Gebby a royalty. One prime example was Al Marciante in NJ - he cooked up the Marciante Blue Streak, the HP case blown out straight, sharp shoulder, minimally short neck. While testing it he had his wife spotting for him through a spotting scope. When he asked her if she could see his bullet holes she replied "nope, all I saw with each shot was a blue streak in the air." The bullet cores were melting from the extreme velocity, probably well in excess of 4000fps. Toned down it was still a formidable beast. Always wanted one.....

A Savage 22 HP will shoot 5 in 1" with the Speer 70 gr .224 semipoint SN. Powercoating the 70 TSX will also produce acceptable accuracy. Years ago I had an 03 varmint rifle in 22 HP that shot sub moa with .228 Hornadys. S&B still makes ammo for it 5.6x52R. Also work well with cast bullets if your bore is minty.
