Has the pleasure of watching ground zero in Nam, courtesy of the New Jersey. A salvo of 16" shells leaves a mark, trust me on that. True enough.

Saw the New Jersey when she was in port at Subic. Buddies and I went down to the carrier pier at Cubi Pt. where she was tied up. If you're a gun nut, looking at those 16 inch guns up close gives you a feeling that defies description.

Those guns have gain twist rifling. Now you did it. Everyone on CF will now be ordering a Bartlein barrel with a gain twist.

That would be some serious recoil. That's why the decks were made of wood, so they would flex and not bend when they were fired. Made them vulnerable though to bombers.

That wooden deck is there for thermal purposes. There's a lot of steel armor underneath the wood. All that steel gets extremely hot from the the sun light shining on it.

Twist rate is 1-400". Should be good for VLD's? The muzzle velocity (MV) was up to 2800 fps with a 2100 pound shell and muzzle energy was 98,406 ft. tons. https://chuckhawks.com/16-50_gun_facts.html

Were the big guns a right or left twist? And did some ships have a different twist.

The most interesting question, to me anyway: How accurate were the 16 inch guns? For example, during test shoots off Crete in 1987, fifteen shells were fired from 34,000 yards (31,900 m), five from the right gun of each turret. The pattern size was 220 yards (200 m), 0.64% of the total range. 14 out of the 15 landed within 250 yards (230 m) of the center of the pattern and 8 were within 150 yards (140 m). Shell-to-shell dispersion was 123 yards (112 m), 0.36% of total range. 1.047" X 34000/100 =356 inches. Lets call it 10 yds. So if the pattern size is 220 yd, they are grouping 22 MOA. Not many one shot kills, I imagine. Although, the next sentence indicates 14 out of 15 landed within 250 yds of center of the pattern, which would indicate a 500 yd pattern, or 45 plus moa. Of course when the target is a beach, or a road, or a 300 yd x 30 yd battleship, the odds of a first shot strike increase.
People who choose to brew up their own storms bitch loudest about the rain.

What would the angle of the guns be for maximum distance?

DON’T BE TOO PROUD OF THIS TECHNOLOGICAL TERROR YOU’VE CONSTRUCTED. THE ABILITY TO DESTROY A PLANET IS INSIGNIFICANT NEXT TO THE POWER OF THE FORCE.

A friend of mine was a crew member on a C141 star lifter. Told the story of how they were making their initial descent somewhere in Vietnam and was ordered to climb immediately because they were flying into the arc of the New Jerseys 16” shells that was pounding some land target. He claimed they were at 24,000 feet. Don’t know if he was BS ing or not, how high can those shells arc?
