Yep. It was always great to see the thaw and the Caspian seals showing up.

Lingcod are decent fighters since they don’t have swim bladders like other bottomfish. The swim bladders of rockfish (Sebastes) will get distended from being brought up too fast and they can’t “equalize”. When a rockfish gets “decompression sickness” they don’t fight anymore and if they’re released without sending them back to depth they’ll die on the surface. Lingcod don’t have that problem and they’re a top tier predator in their environment so they can put up a decent fight.

Halibut, especially when fishing them deep (<350’) with 48-60 ounces of lead, are like reeling in a pallet of bricks! I really enjoy eating halibut, much more than I enjoy eating any salmon, but I don’t enjoy fishing for them deeper than 200’ in reasonable current. When I fish for halibut I’m strictly grocery shopping. When I fish for salmon or most other fish I’m playing with my food. 😀

Lingcod is EXCELLENT table fare and probably my 2nd favorite fish to eat.

They are one of my favorites for eating. Growing up many years ago north of Seattle, we used to catch them once in awhile in No. Puget Sound.

Caught a few out of Westport, Wa.

Caught a couple in Chiniak Bay (Kodiak, 2010), but they weren't that big. ....and "YES!", they are some fine eating!

1) for the fight, give me a King salmon. They are a blast!
2) for eating, I'll take a boatload of Pacific cod.

The wife and me put together a marinade to soak salmon in overnight. Grill it for dinner the next day.
Always grilled more than we could eat. Turned the leftovers into salmon patties the next day! THAT is some fine eating! 😋
Always brought home some smoked salmon too! I can eat a ton of smoked salmon dip! WOW!

Found them up top, of the same transition, we fished last weekend.

No big fish, just a pile of cookie cutter, 14 -17", school fish.

Damn good eating size.

I was driving a little ways away and saw where someone was going to have PB and Jelly for Sunday dinner because their grill was on fire.
