My brother recently gave my dad’s savage 99A to my son. Dad was losing his eye sight and he mounted a Weaver K4 60-B scope. I believe he only used it once or twice. He remarked that the scope was too much, “all I see is fur i don’t know what part of the deer I’m looking at”.
The mount, rings and scope are in great condition.
Is there a period authentic (1927-1928) variable scope that would be more useful hunting Maine forests? Most shots are 35-60 yards, can be longer, 150-200 yards with a scope.
Thanks

https://www.vintagegunscopes.com/1inchscopes/k4-60b-good

Field of view listed as 31 ft. at 100 yds

At 35 yd. distance, a whole deer will fit in the view with room to spare. But a running deer will be hard to keep in the view. A K2.5 might be better.

No practical 1920's vintage variables. But lower than 4 power were available. Crude by modern standards. Maybe a 1950's Weaver K2.5 or KV would work and still look older.

Keep it. Try it. And it was your dad's.

Thanks Bruce.
After I posted I realized that while the rifle is 1927-1928, the scope would be 1955-1957ish.
Your right, I don’t plan to part with the K4.
