I bought my first car at age 16 in 1964 - a 1950 chevy. With a tall bumper jack and some boards in the trunk for when I got stuck in the mud, I could go most places my 4WD P/U can go today. The thing smelled like a wet dog year round, 'cause my hunting dogs rode in that big ol' back seat. The aroma left from stringers of catfish driven home in the trunk complemented the wet dog smell nicely. It was the only car I had, and if a girl was woman enough to go out with me in that thing I knew it was going to be a fun night. Good times!

Room for five......................Three deer on the hood and two on the trunk. Back in the 60's that was a common sight in Maine as hunters headed home with their bounty! laugh

Of course the 4WD vehicles have much more ability than sedans. Thats all we had years ago however and today even the sedans are better.

We were going to hunt an entire week in Patton, Maine. This was about 1968 or so. There were two vehicles and five guys in about three tents. One of the tents was rigged for propane heat.

The car that went first down the half frozen woods road was the Cadillac. The thinking was that if it could make it then the Willys could easily follow. What happened was that the Jeep smashed into the back of the Caddy! Turns out that the Caddy had disc brakes and the jeep did not and it could not stop with wet brakes.

After an entire week of hunting the only thing anyone got was the grouse I shot the head off of with my 7mm RM. I ate the white meat and one of the guys actually ate the liver and whatever else you can eat in a bird.

That was the only year I got skunked in Maine. There were no deer to be found there.
