Has anyone tried any current factory ammo in a 244 Remington? I know that Mule Deer and Mike Venturino have both written about the 1-12" twist being able to stabilize some 100 grain bullets. Just wondering if anyone has had any luck trying it.
If anyone has a lead on any 6mm Remington brass please let me know. Thanks. AFAIK the 722s, 740s, and 760s in 244 REM all had 1-12" ROT barrels, while the 725s came with both 1-12" and 1-10" ROT barrels, depending on when they were made. After Remington started chambering the 725 in 243 with 1-10" ROT barrels, it appears that the 244 REMs were also cut with a 1-10" ROT. My 725 has a 1-10" ROT barrel and was assembled in 07/61.

No question that the 80 gr TTSX will work and @3500 fps it will kill any medium game. Friend's wife uses in in 243 to kill a cow Elk every year.

If anyone has a lead on any 6mm Remington brass please let me know. Thanks. Just got some for mine. RavenRock - PRVI brass - 6mmI would look for the shortest bullet I could find for a 244 1-12" rot. I checked the lengths on several factory offerings and the Barnes 80g ttsx and the 90g Nosler BT are both longer than some of the 100 grain offerings. Based on that, if having to use factory ammo, I would pick the 100 grain Federal Powershocks which at last check were Speer Hot Core. It was the shortest of the lot and is a respected performer. If hand loading I would go Sierra 85 bthp- it is a tough little bullet easy to load for. I love this bullet.

IIRC(!), an article by Layne Simpson stated that his 1-14” Kimber 6x45 would shoot the old turned 85 NPs, but not the new ones. At any rate, a 1-12 should be fine, but a note to Nosler should clear up any doubt.
Another wrinkle is that the latter .244s made just before the name change already had the 1-9” barrels, so that’s something to check. This one was made in 1958, so I will check the rate of twist when it arrives. I think Remington 788 production started in ‘67.

Missed out on a 788 6mm the other day for $399. I have two 700's already, both love the 95gr Partitions.
I was under the impression the stamped 244's had a 1-12 twist, my 700's stamped 6mm have a 1-9.25 (IIRC) twist in them. I haven't personally tried anything bigger than 100gr Factory Federal blue box or Core Lokts in either, never had the need/desire. I would think and have talked to a few that said it "should" stabilize up to 100's but my thought is 80-95 grainers were the ticket in the 1-12. That would have been Christmas in July. I remember the 9.25 ROT, now I see 9 twist. Any details on that? DF
