Burl's homey image with his wholesome Christmas shows and songs did not portray his acting ability and hid the menace underneath so eloquently displayed in movies like The Big Country.
Walter Brennan just limped around whining and complaining saying "dagnabbit".

One of the best. All star cast. Gregory Peck and Charlton Heston. Jean Simmons and Carol Baker. And Jean said to Carol, You want your man to keep proving himself to you over and over again. She described the modern day woman almost perfectly.

Burl Ives was certainly a talented guy.
Walter Brennan was, too. He played a wide range of roles over his career but seemed to get type cast in the country ones he was more recently famous for.

I really like Walter Brennan, but Burl Ives was one helluvan actor!
He sold every character he ever portrayed!
I rank him among the greats, even better than Stewart or Fonda.
Ives, Jack Nicholson, And Spencer Tracy will get me to watch a movie I have no interest in seeing just to see them act.
Stewart and Fonda too, but not to the degree of the 3 mentioned.

Burlington was very articulate even though often portrayed poor and un educated characters, he had a way with words. His best performance was probably in the Big Country

Like 'em both but Burl has the edge for me.
Liked him in Day of the Outlaw and Smoky. Also, like his singing a lot. One of my favorite Christmas songs is Holly Jolly Christmas.
