Please explain to an old man who can't keep up with things. Thanks in advance.

I believe CO2 has a role in oil extraction. Might take a look at the end
point of the proposed pipelines.

5sdad,

This inna nutshell.

The carbon Capture pipelines involve 5 states.

You can find all the info you can stand by searching the 'net.

The major purpose is to store CO2 from the manufacture of Ethanol , or corn gas , which is another extremely stupid endeavor.

It is a $$$$$$$$$ scheme. Farm land , and other land is being taken by imminent domain.

Isn't it fun. They create one disaster and another one to fix it. Neither one is good for what it was designed for except laundering money. GW Bush was all in on it. Truth is he was as bad al Gore.

The Kemper County Lignite plant is/was a 7 billion dollar coal powered electric plant about 10 miles WNW of NAS meridian. It was supposed to gasify the lignite coal from a YUGE coal deposit and use carbon capture technology to sequester the carbon dioxide. Well, the coal conversion and carbon capture deal didn’t work out so eventually they had to resort to natural gas to generate power.

Nomobama even came down to dedicate the thing bragging about the new clean coal fired power plants. Riiiiight 🤬

The project just hit its first major snag with ND rejecting Summit Carbon Solutions pipeline permit.

This is the outfit putting the project together.

Artificial lift using Co2 to extract crude oil...all the while branding it as a "green" environmental project?

Tax breaks and wealth extraction along the way......

This isn’t an EOR project, this is carbon capture and sequestration (CCS).

The reason this industry is progressing is because of the 45Q tax credit. For every metric ton on CO2 sequestered a company will get an $85 tax credit, for 12 years. The first 5 years can be taken as revenue instead of a credit which then reverts to the credit for the final 7 years. This was a big piece of Joey’s IRA that passed last year….

The fact that it terminates in North Dakota is just a coincidence?

It will be a multi-billion dollar industry in Louisiana.

Denbury said the latest two deals will push its total carbon dioxide sequestration portfolio to roughly 2 billion tons across 10 sites in Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, Texas and Wyoming.

The roots of CCS dates back to 2008, with the most significant legislation passed in the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2018 (signed by Donald Trump).

The following is a reply to your question - not an endorsement pro or con. wink

Carbon Capture and Sequestration (CSS) in this context is taking low or ambient pressure Carbon Dioxide (CO2) generated by combustion or ethanol production and compressing to liquid. The liquified CO2 will be transported via pipeline and sequestered underground. In most cases the compression will be done by a second party, not the primary industry. The goal, backed by government tax incentives, is to reduce climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

1. From an industry standpoint, carbon scores are the real deal and provide a competitive edge to those with the lowest scores. That is the industry driver.

2. From a sequestration standpoint, tax incentives are the real deal and provide compressor/pipeline operations with the payback.

Obviously both points have critics.

In a simple example it is a pipeline of consumer tax dollars being funneled into the rich people’s pockets. Very simple really. Edk

It started before then. I know because I worked on getting it going. It has been going for over 20 years and has extended the Weyburn Saskatchewan oil fields life by over 30 years. But the current one is not supported by me or most folks in North Dakota.
