What is the simplest sharpener to put a good edge on sporting knives today? I'd like something compact enough for a desk drawer
Lansky guide rod type?

Worksharp guided sharpening system is priced right and works better than the lansky. A Spyderco sharpmaker is more compact and is great for touch up work and microbeveling, but it’s more expensive than the worksharp. It is also harder to establish the initial profile at the angle you want.

Cheap 1"x30" belt grinder from harbor freight. 400 grit belt, and a leather belt with green compound. Two minutes max.

I know this will fall on deaf ears, but Ya'll really need to learn how to use a whetstone.

I like a Smith's type diamond stone used under a stream of water in the kitchen sink. Followed up by a gentle stropping with a rough sided piece of leather glued to a wood block. Fastest, and best, way I've found.

WorkSharp, the Ken Onion model. My Tru-Hone cost 10 times more than the WorkSharp and hardly gets used anymore. I have diamond stones, whetstones, steels, diamond steels, ceramic rods and the Ken Onion is the easiest and fastest to master.

The best for something simple, no mess and will fit in a desk drawer, or a pocket is the Work Sharp Guided Field Sharpener. That said if you want simple and want to do it right its hard to beat a good splash and go water stone. There is a learning curve but its worth it and will serve you well for a lifetime.

I'm a leatherworker and keep all my knives razor sharp. I use Coarse, Fine, and Extra-Fine DMT plate sharpeners. When I go out hunting, I take my Spyderco Sharpmaker.

I thought this looked interesting the first time I saw it, but was afraid it would be a little cheesy. Damn thing works pretty good to throw in the drawer and put a decent edge on a kitchen knife and many sporting knives. Only thing my wife has been able to use and not bother me to sharpen the kitchen knives. It is a little under $100. There is one called a Horl that is better quality I think, but it is twice as much almost. Based on what the OP asked it might be a decent option.

Those are very good for what they are. Very fast, simple, and do pretty well. Don't know that these guys are going to want to run their Ingrams through one though.

Lansky guide rod type? I use a Lansky. It works well for shorter blades, about 4”or less. And it works well for many broad heads.

I have the wicked edge and it is one of the best Ive used, but it is very time consuming. The Onion model above is what I use most of the time. Will put a mirror finish on a blade and fast. Damn thing just works. Just have ot be careful to watch the speed and not get the blade hot
