Someone close to me might have it. Has anyone dealt with it, and what would you suggest to help a family member with it?

Just be there. Your words won’t be very helpful but your presence can be. Don’t treat the person any differently. Be a help for respite for the caregivers/family. They will get worn down more quickly than the one afflicted at times. Maybe be available as the disease progresses to allow the spouse or primary caregiver to step away for a few hours to get some stress relief.

My wife’s father died of it. That was before we knew each other. As I remember he went downhill pretty quickly.

I think there are a lot of newly introduced medicines for this.

I don’t think there are many/any new meds. It’s an awful disease. The person is fully mentally capable. I try to treat them like I always would when it comes to conversation and such. It’s a horrible way to go.

Imagine Parkinsons on warp speed squared. A couple friends had it, they went fast and toward the end, really hard for them and everyone else. I think if I got it, I'd set myself up to skip the final chapters and just get to the end.

Tuesday's with Morrie is a good book though.

Someone close to me might have it. Has anyone dealt with it, and what would you suggest to help a family member with it? It’s a bitch. If the diagnosis is confirmed, spend as much time doing the the things that they enjoy; while they still can.

I suggest you hope the initial suspicion is incorrect and that your loved one does not have it. My father died of ALS. Really, his course was not as bad as some. With the help of my dear (and determined) Mother, he lived out his life at home. I noted him suffering some on a Sunday night visit. I got the call two days later that the best man I’d ever known was gone. Dad did participate in clinical trials, and research is always ongoing. I guess no situation is ever hopeless and, ultimately, I believe that God is in charge. Best of luck going forward. And give all your loved ones an extra hug today. Life, and love, are precious things.
