My wife has a cousin over there who served in the Australian Navy and was seconded to the US Navy...he retired there and married a nice American lass. Family name of Rosser...massive family that reaches all over the world.

Your countrymen's propensity to call someone a democrat with the expectation of it being understood that they are referring to a particularly loathsome and noisome creature is pretty much lost on most of us as we just generally take it to mean the individual voted democrat.
If for instance you said he is a 'dirty filthy democrat', we would take it as he is a dirty filthy democrat
If you verbally stated he is a 'DIRty FilthY DemocraT'...we would understand the epithet to mean he is a 'filthy lowlife piece of shit'.
