I've seen all of the movie more than once, just never all in one sitting. Caught a few minutes of it yesterday and noted a sign over a building that said. "Town Marshall". In that context Marshal should be spelled with one L, not 2. I'd not noticed that previously.
I can't imagine an error like that and believe it was done for a reason. But why. The only thing that comes to mind is that someone in the 1800's actually mis-spelled it and to make the movie historically accurate they included the wrong spelling in the movie. But that is only a guess.
Any ideas, we have a lot of western movie buff's here and I can't be the 1st to notice that.

As near as I can find out it was CORRECTLY spelled with one L as far back as 1789, maybe back to the 1400's. But that doesn't mean it wasn't mis-spelled often and that is my thinking for the movie. I don't see a director doing that by mistake in a movie was well done as Tombstone. My GUESS is that it was actually mis-spelled in Tombstone at the time the movie was set, and they did the same in the movie for historical accuracy.
Even today the words Marshal, Marshall, and Martial are often mis-used even though they are pronounced the same.

My guess would be that it was spelled and painted that way by some set department worker who was assigned to do job.

Shouldn't be a big issue today, damn sure wasn't then IMO. Hell, half that rode through town couldn't read anyway , & the other half probably didn't give a fugg.
The sign painter or buyer probably didn't know or car either. Maybe a 100 other things had priority.

If it was spelled wrong you can bet a 24HCF member works for the prop department.

Really? Big points for using period correct clothing, tack & firearms, tons of attention to detail but got the story or events wrong?
Hadn't heard that.

Lewis and Clark’s journals of their epic journey offer a great deal of inconsistencies in spelling. But, they weren’t at the Okay Corral.
