My 1st attempt at burying a skull went well IMO I buried it in Feb, skin/hair on. It's going to take a couple of rounds of peroxide as it came out of the ground very dark. But there is still some cedar near the bases where he had just rubbed when I shot him. I pulled it last Thursday just prior to leaving town since a young bear has been cruising through daily and I was askeerd it might get nosy.

I have buried heads in my worm beds and I skin them first. In a month they come out clean, boil a bit for color and you are good. A friend of mine has a small pond which has a lot of crawdads, that is the best place to deflesh a deer head.

Our active bug season is fairly short up here and I was given mixed reactions when I told people that I was burying 'skin on'. There wasn't a hair to be found in the dirt though.

I only did one. Daughter killed a button buck for her first deer. Skinned and buried. 2 months later its came out and was ruined. Skulled crumbled with any pressure. Not sure what caused it. We did have subterranean termites that we had treated a few years later.

I knew a guy in PENN who shot a large buck and put the head inside of a cage on top of his garden shed. The birds and insects took care of it, but it took a long time

Looks pretty clean - any stank left? None. That sucker was nasty when I put it in the ground. Killed in early Dec, put it in ground mid Feb. Mild winter, it may have frozen a time or two but never really froze up solid before being buried. It was put in a spot that we backfilled 5-6 years back that doesn't get drove on etc so it's still relatively un-compacted good dark dirt. I've done the hang a cage from building deal in the past but wanted this one to be ready this year to hang side by side with the skull of wifes deer[she paid to have hers done]. Killed 6 apart. They'll look good SXS on the wall. Hers Mine

The problem is that the water's turned off before the season opens.

LOL I did this last year. Buried the skull and wrapped the antlers in tinfoil to keep from bleaching................ the neighbors dog dug it up and brought it back to me. I will figure something out different this year.

I will figure something out different this year. I put a washtub over mine with a retaining wall block[#90] on top of the tub. Was still a little worried about a bear though. After some thought I'm about convinced to leave the skull as is, maybe use a whitewashed plank to mount it on.

Have done two this way. Put a tote over it with a brick or three. Buried in November and pull in Sept. Clean and paint. Works for me. The one on the left is 2022. One on the right is 2019.

How would one do a pronghorn skull. I have one to do, I am thinking remove the flesh, and boil. Gorilla glue the horns sheath back on when done. Anyone done this. I have had mixed results, burying deer heads.

My hunting buddy buried a 150 class in his backyard where he thought it was safe. Somebody stole it.
