Haven't seen one of these before so I bought it. Still trying to figure out what I have and the value.

Google "Silver Certificate".

That's old, one of the larger cut sizes.

I'm not an expert or anything, but I would say that's pre 1920s just from the size of it, so it's probably worth some money. I've never seen a dual portait certificate like that.

That's very cool. It's from a time when everyone understood that money wasn't the note itself, but rather the note was the mere claim check for the money.

Our betters intentionally conditioned us, during a period of successive changes over several decades (culminating in August of 1971), to think of the note as the money itself, so they could quietly sever the actual money from the note, and we'd eventually be happy handing worthless paper notes back and forth to each other while believing it was money.

By this means, value was attached to the money via the psychological sensation itself of holding paper while believing it was the money, rather than the valuable commodity which that paper (until just a few years previously) could be exchanged for; in the case of your note, the amount of silver contained in a silver dollar (or two silver half dollars, or four silver quarters, or ten silver dimes).

This allowed them to work a Ponzi scheme on us whereby they got to print and spend as much of it as they wanted, with no limits, thus fantastically enriching themselves and their partners in crime, while gradually impoverishing the general population via a persistent degradation in the purchasing power of the our currency.

THAT is far out and groovy!
Intrinsic value probably isn't very much. As a collectible, it definitely has value, just not a lot in it's condition.
Don't know what you paid for it, I hope not much, but it's definitely a conversation piece.

Very nice piece of Americana!

Back in the 90's, I was standing in line at a grocery store checkout. Three little jerk, Gothic kids came in. The drink machine outside wouldn't take their "dollar bills"!
I quickly snatched three $1 bills out of my pocket and swapped them for their three "Silver Certificate" bills.
I still have the bills and they aren't worth much. They were well worn.
I often wonder if one of their dad's or granddad's ever figured out what happened to their Silver Certificates!

When I was a kid, you could mail one of those to the US treasury and they'd sent you a tiny packet of real silver. Those days are long gone.

I remember in elementary school a little girl brought one of those in for show and tell, and she said the same thing.

The first 1oz silver "coins" (.999 fine silver) we purchased, silver was about $12/oz. Now it's up around $30/oz.
First gold purchased was about $1450/oz. Gold is now over $1900/oz.
The seller I buy coins from thinks gold will be over $8K/oz pretty soon.

Makes sense because he wouldn't sell as many if he told you $800/oz.

If he believes this, he’s a damned fool for selling it at $1900 an ounce.
