stx;
Good evening my cyber friend, I trust the week's been kind to you and you're well.

A couple quick stories of BC black bears first, then I'll answer your query.

Years ago my wife and I bumped into a local rancher who was checking his herd and we got to shooting the breeze as we knew a few of the same people. He mentioned he'd had trouble with a bear killing his cattle, as in not calves but yearling steers. It's MO was to just run up to them and swat them on the head. The rancher said the skulls looked like you'd hit them with a sledge hammer and he was impressed at the damage.

Oh, he said it was just an average 5'5" sort of bear too, nothing huge or special, just one that decided to specialize.

Yesterday afternoon we had two different black bears in the yard, which makes 4 this year for the yard and another sow and cub spotted just down the road. Anyways stx, one of them tore up a fair bit of a Ponderosa pine stump in the yard in fairly short order so they're reasonably destructive that way as well.

Lastly, years back my wife and I and another couple watched a little one chasing a mulie heifer down a fairly steep section of mountainside and it came very close to catching her. We'd been assured bears weren't that fast and couldn't run downhill, both of which were obviously untrue.

Based on way, way too much experience with the chippie bruins, I'll go with the latter option for the fellow there.

All the best to you down south this weekend stx.

Dwayne

Black crime run amuck. Fortunately a transkaren was on hand to comfort and guide the oppressed soul.

Drunk and stupid. Fortunately it worked out for all involved and drunk/stupid guy gets a first rate story to tell about the time that he stood down a bear.

What does this have to do with airplanes? smile It might have been plain stupid, but maybe not so much. In some places bear encounters are so common that it isn't unusual to see people simply chase them away unarmed. That was a bit more brazen than most though.

Most people don't really want the truth.

They just want constant reassurance that what they believe is the truth.

Stupid -with a capital "S".
I've also been within ~5 feet of a blackie, in his little cave.
Thank God he was trying very hard to hibernate!
Stupidity on my own part!

Interesting combo of what looked like a drunk/careless/stupid human and an old and fat bear past his get-mean days.

I got the idea that man had dealt with that bruin before ... more than a couple of times.. Maybe not. Just guessing. But that is still a dumb way to handle a bear in the neighborhood.

I see a combo, the drinking & stupid probably trumps all but the guy had a way about him.

Kinda what I was thinking. Can't believe he'd act that way around a bear on a first time encounter with it. Either way, not impressed.

I got the feeling that isn't the first time he' dealt with that bear. The bear sat down while he opened the gate. Granted the bear gave him a swat but nothing to serious. Could have been a few to many brews too.

Scratches weren’t bad but looked like they broke skin enough that rabies or some other infection might be a concern. Funny until it ain’t.
