My Mom, and both my Wife's parents were cremated. That simple job can run $4K to $1K depending on where you go. Thank goodness we found these folks. https://www.cremationsociety-idaho.com/ Advertised price at $925. When FIL passed that included transport from the hospital.

Caskets?

Dad wanted to be buried. He had made his arrangements and had a trust fund set up to pay for it. Except it did not, quite.

First, the county demands a concrete vault with a water tight seal on the lid. Second, Dad had chosen the least expensive casket available which was fiberglass. That was twenty years ago. That unit was no longer in production. I paid for an upgrade to Aluminum.

I am pretty sure the Aluminum casket was less than $1K. No embalming, no chapel service, no body prep, no viewing,

Pickup at nursing home, transport twenty five miles, put in casket, buy and place vault, deliver casket 10 miles to cemetery and place in hole, cover it up, date the existing headstone. Almost $4K in total. Dad's trust covered about $3200. No big deal, I cut a check for the balance.

I told my wife to not claim my body. The county has gotten plenty out of me, this one is on them.

laws may vary state to state but in Missouri here I've got a bit of experience in buring people unfortunately, you can legally be buried in a cardboard box and not even have to be embalmed so long as you do it under a certain number hours here I'm pretty sure it's still 24 hours...

If a person is deciding for himself, whatever he wants. If it is someone deciding for a family member, too often a great deal of money is wasted to impress people with how much the decider(s) loved the deceased.

Hell you don't even have to be buried in a cemetery here. Private property is cool as long as it doesn't turn into a commercial operation. No box or anything.

Some funeral homes won't let you use one.

They resent you buying one for $1200 when they sell the same thing for $4000.

My buddy and I built one this year for a state senator. Said he wanted a pine box so he got one.

If I made a stainless steel casket, I'd call it the Prison Schitter.

What do you think?

That's at least a $1,400 mark-up.

And once you're dead, what does it matter anyway?

The American way of death is absurd. The cost of caskets and funerals is out of reason. They used to bury a person within a day of death unless the coroner needed more time with it. Embalming came about as a way to preserve the body until out of town relatives can get there. It's not necessary, usually not required, and does nothing but make money for the undertaker.
Expensive steel caskets and vaults do nothing but make cemeteries happy. They don't rot and leave a divot that has to be filled in a few years later.
