The daughter and I were hanging some bow stands this morning and came across something that was really interesting. At first glimpse, it just looked like a bunch of trash in the woods. Since it is near a major tributary, the first thought was it was debris from flooding.

Closer inspection revealed it was 40-50 of those aluminum balloons, like they use at parties. Our first thought was "Why would anyone have a party near here?"

Then she told me "Dad, they're all kinds...It's a girl. It's a boy. Wedding, Graduation, etc."

Some were old, some were new, some were hanging in the trees.

Mind you, this is in an area of about 800 square feet of big timber in the middle of nowhere.

I've heard of these areas where wind currents can cause such, but have never seen anything like it.

How is that not littering? If they are going to release them to go who knows where, why not make them for some kind of paper or the corn based plastic that will degrade in a few months. They probably wouldn't like it if people were dumping their forever lasting trash on their property. Some people are azhoe.

I've found them all over, even deep in the rez probably from over a hundred miles away. they are released on purpose often in someone's celebration.

Happy Birthday...

In elementary school we would release a balloon from every kid in the early spring.
It would have your name and address on it. Then as part of geography class we had a map to show where they were found. With our terrain and population, most didn't get too far, many never reported.

Oh the 70s.
Imagine all that now!

I clean 6 or 8 of them out of my woods every year, it seems. It's very rural there, so either everyone's setting them loose or they're carrying a long way from some remote populated area. I hate them.

Ranchers hate those damn Mylar balloons.

They come down in pastures, and cattle eat them and die.

I've picked up several through the years here. No telling where they came from, but judging from how many I've picked up, they must be turning lots of them skyward.

I can tell you where you can find a long cable with triangle shaped flags all along it. It appears to be something towed behind a plane.

I've had the pleasure of trying to get close enough to a calf to try to snag the darned thing out of his mouth.
Glad I was younger and quicker!
I've found many from Albuquerque in my pastures at Wagon Mound - ~130 miles "as the crow flies".
